Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petition to Reopen Ennis, Nenagh and St. John's Emergency Departments: Discussion (16 Nov 2023)

Paul Gavan: That will mean at least one further life lost. I would just give one other statistic for the record and for the committee, which is that last year the horrendous total was 18,012 patients for the whole year.

Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petition to Reopen Ennis, Nenagh and St. John's Emergency Departments: Discussion (16 Nov 2023)

Paul Gavan: Right now, today, we already have 18,963 patients who have spent time on trolleys. We have already broken our horrendous record and there is still another six weeks to go before the end of the year. It continues to get worse and words genuinely fail me with regard to the Minister and the Government's failure to address this.

Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petition to Reopen Ennis, Nenagh and St. John's Emergency Departments: Discussion (16 Nov 2023)

Paul Gavan: I agree.

Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petition to Reopen Ennis, Nenagh and St. John's Emergency Departments: Discussion (16 Nov 2023)

Paul Gavan: I agree; it is even worse than I stated. My point is when we keep seeing it get worse and worse each year, the failure and inaction at Government level is what completely flounders me. It is entirely unacceptable.

Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petition to Reopen Ennis, Nenagh and St. John's Emergency Departments: Discussion (16 Nov 2023)

Paul Gavan: Absolutely.

Committee on Public Petitions: Consideration of Public Petition to Reopen Ennis, Nenagh and St. John's Emergency Departments: Discussion (16 Nov 2023)

Paul Gavan: That is perhaps the most valuable part of today, the fact the witnesses have brought that list. Hopefully through this committee we can hold the relevant people fully to account. That is the key to this. I commend each of our guests for their presentations and the passion with which they have made them today. I hope the committee will follow through on this. I thank Deputy Buckley for...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Community Development Projects (21 Nov 2023)

Paul Gavan: I welcome the Minister of State. I ask him to make a statement about future funding under the social intervention fund for Limerick city and the implications for vital community projects. The economic and social intervention fund for Limerick city was set up under the Limerick regeneration framework implementation plan, which set out a programme of physical, social and economic...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Community Development Projects (21 Nov 2023)

Paul Gavan: I was pleased to see a key line in the Minister of State's response, which frankly has not been confirmed to any of these groups to date, which is that the Department has agreed to continue funding for ESIF for 2024. This is a very welcome announcement. What I cannot understand, and perhaps we may be at one on this, is why those working on these key projects are being told by the council to...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (21 Nov 2023)

Paul Gavan: Over the past few weeks, the Oireachtas has been a venue for some important debates on Irish unity. Ireland's Future met 11 political parties from across Ireland, most of them with representatives elected to the Dáil and Seanad. I pay tribute to our colleague, Senator Black, for her work in that regard. They discussed how best to develop dialogue among the parties to ensure the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Nov 2023)

Paul Gavan: Go maith ... I will start again. Go raibh maith agat, a Chathaoirleach. That is the effect of a Billy Bragg concert and being out a little too late last night I suspect. I want to raise the issue of Shannon Airport. A very good report was launched several weeks ago. I attended the launch along with my colleague, Deputy Maurice Quinlivan. It is a report by Oxford Economics that shows the...

Seanad: Human Tissue (Transplantation, Post-Mortem, Anatomical Examination and Public Display) Bill 2022: Second Stage (22 Nov 2023)

Paul Gavan: I appreciate the opportunity to address this Bill today, which Sinn Féin will be supporting. It is crucial to recognise the origin of this Bill, which is a reactive response to revelations in England, specifically Bristol and two other hospitals, where more than 30,000 bodies or organs were retained. The Dunne inquiry, which was initiated in 2000 but was marred by delays and costs, did...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (28 Nov 2023)

Paul Gavan: I too want to be associated with the expressions of sympathy for Tras Honan's family. I welcome the release of Emily Hand and all of the hostages who have been released so far. I hope we will all agree that what we need is a permanent ceasefire at this point in time. We need to be absolutely clear about that, and all remaining hostages must be released, both those held by Hamas and those...

Seanad: Finance (No. 2) Bill 2023: Second Stage (28 Nov 2023)

Paul Gavan: I welcome the Minister. The finance Bill gives effect to the tax changes announced in budget 2024, in addition to a number of other important provisions and changes to the tax code. The budget announced last month needed to deal with a number of shocks Ireland has had to face in recent years, especially energy prices and a sharp rise in inflation. Higher prices have hit lower and middle...
