Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Impact of Brexit on the Agrifood Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Dec 2020)

Michael Fitzmaurice: My understanding from media reports is that the large meat processors set up their own stands at trade fairs and do not bother with Bord Bia. They have bigger stands than Bord Bia to promote their products. I see that Bord Bia went to three different places about live exports. There is a 6% or 7% changeover in the British market, when we know that there could be serious consequences....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Impact of Brexit on the Agrifood Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Dec 2020)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I wish to clarity one matter. I listened to Ms McCarthy speak about the trade missions. I specifically spoke about the meat industry and meat factories. Some of them might take their own place at a trade mission. Is Ms McCarthy saying that there might be Irish meat factories that may have other locations around the world and that might be not just promoting Irish beef, but other beef?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Impact of Brexit on the Agrifood Industry: Discussion (Resumed) (15 Dec 2020)

Michael Fitzmaurice: They would be promoting French beef, Polish beef or other beef, so they would not be able to go on the Bord Bia stand.

Brexit (Fishing Industry): Statements (21 Jan 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I have two questions. I refer to the announcement today of the linear cut of 2% which is going to affect small family farms around the country because Britain is not paying into the EU. The previous Taoiseach undertook that Ireland would make up this deficit. Will that be done, rather than letting farmers around the country, especially low-income farmers, face a 2% linear cut? On the...

Covid-19 (Social Protection): Statements (28 Jan 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I first need to acknowledge the work being done by the people in the Department of Social Protection over the past year. Is there any intention to consider those who have businesses and who are pension age or over? They were not entitled to the PUP even though they had money borrowed. Is there any intention to change that? One of the vaccines we had hung our hat on is not being...

Response of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage to Covid-19: Statements (28 Jan 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: We talk about building houses. There is currently a problem with flooding in Lough Funshinagh, County Roscommon. Will the Department and especially the NPWS help in every way and not obstruct solutions to that problem? Second, people build one-off houses in rural Ireland. There might be one or two, at most, on site. At present, they are off-site due to the Covid regulations. Is that...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Challenges for the Forestry Sector: Department of Agriculture and the Marine (29 Jan 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: I thank the witnesses. I will ask quick-fire questions. They might give me short, sharp answers because I have a good few questions. I will start with questions for Mr. Dunne. How long on average does it take to process applications for forestry, planting or road licences?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Challenges for the Forestry Sector: Department of Agriculture and the Marine (29 Jan 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: No, I am asking what the average time is since November, whether it is three months, nine months or a year? If I send in an application to the Department, for planting, felling or a road licence, how long on average is it taking the Department?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Challenges for the Forestry Sector: Department of Agriculture and the Marine (29 Jan 2021)

Michael Fitzmaurice: No, I am asking how long would it take were I to put in an application right now. How long, on average, has it taken over the past three months? If I had put in an application three months ago, would I be through the gate by now? Forget about appeals, I am not talking about that, just the Department. How long has it taken to process an application? It is a simple question. The second...
