Fidelma Healy Eames: I ask the Deputy Leader to arrange a serious debate after Easter on the role-out of the personal insolvency legislation and the ramifications of the targets set for homeowners.
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Mar 2013)
Fidelma Healy Eames: I have closely examined the legislation and there is a real danger that the Government may have inadvertently given the banks too much authority. Ironically, the remarks made by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport may have done us all a favour. He shone a light on the over dictatorial and over authoritarian approach to families adopted by the banks. Women and families are well...
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Mar 2013)
Fidelma Healy Eames: We do not need the banks telling us what to prioritise. We all know that the family home is sacrosanct. However, it is unwise for banks to now have the authority to set limits on the amount of money that we should spend on food and on health cover. Of course banks can give us guidelines and recommendations but we must watch where power lies. Let us not forget that a short time ago it was...
- Seanad: Order of Business (28 Mar 2013)
Fidelma Healy Eames: My question was given. The Minister for Justice and Equality, and perhaps the Minister for Finance, must examine the ramifications of the targets that were given to banks. If the targets hit homeowners in a way that we cannot manage then the whole of society is at risk. They could result in a collapse.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: National Reform Programme for Ireland 2013: Discussion with Department of the Taoiseach (16 Apr 2013)
Fidelma Healy Eames: I thank the members of the panel for their presentation. I have long been impressed with the five targets set out in EU 2020 and I was wondering when we might get a progress report on them. It is nice to have this in front of us. I have a number of short questions. We seem to be doing well in achieving the targets set out in the action plan for jobs. However, the unemployment figure...

Fidelma Healy Eames: That is a story.
- Seanad: Order of Business (17 Apr 2013)
Fidelma Healy Eames: I also want to be associated with the expressions of sympathy for the victims and those hurt during the Boston marathon. It was an horrendous attack on innocent life. I know when one is coming close to the finishing line, there is very little gas in the tank. To take people out at that point is as low as one can go. I hope those responsible are brought to justice. The abortion Bill is on...

Fidelma Healy Eames: I rise to support Senator O'Donovan. I am very familiar with the hardship being suffered by farmers.

- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Apr 2013)
Fidelma Healy Eames: I would appreciate if I could speak. There is a desperate fodder crisis at the moment. We are looking for a few weeks' support until the grass grows. It has been a very dry and bitterly cold period. Farmers have been unable to get their cattle out and nothing is growing. To be fair, the Minister, Deputy Coveney, addressed us on this matter last evening. He spoke to all of the banks and...

- Seanad: Order of Business (18 Apr 2013)
Fidelma Healy Eames: Fianna Fáil acted all right.
- Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2013)
Fidelma Healy Eames: A Chathaoirligh, it is not unusual to hear you rule frequently that it is not appropriate to comment on any investigation, inquiry or case while it is in process. Last Thursday I was watching the end of the Order of Business on the monitor in my office. I was absolutely shocked to see this practice abused by the Deputy Leader, Senator Ivana Bacik. She commented on the inquest in Galway...

Fidelma Healy Eames: Fair enough.
- Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2013)
Fidelma Healy Eames: Yes, I do have a question. Is it not fair that the same treatment is given to all Members as to the Deputy Leader? She commented without the inquest having been concluded.
