Martin Ferris: I wish to put a supplementary question.

Martin Ferris: The concern I have for these workers is that many have a problem with this. At least one is a single parent with a young daughter and is living off €478.20 per week. That person will be spending a further €60 or €70 per week on transport without any certainty about whether there will be reimbursement. That is a serious problem. One of the people involved has a...
- Other Questions: Equine Industry Issues (19 Jun 2013)
Martin Ferris: This is a serious problem across the country. In the area I come from there is a large number of horses with which nothing can be done, and many of them are going hungry on the side of the road. Some type of scheme must be put in place, perhaps a scrappage scheme as suggested by Deputy Ó Cuív, or a grant aid scheme to ensure something can be done about the problem.
- Topical Issue Debate: Marine Safety (25 Jun 2013)
Martin Ferris: Everybody will be aware of the recent tragedy off the coast of Tramore where the three Bolger brothers lost their lives while fishing. This follows the sinking of the Tit Bonhomme in Glandore Harbour early last year and the loss of the Pere Charles and two other boats in the same area with no bodies recovered. This issue was raised by the Irish Fishermen's Organisation at a recent meeting...
- Topical Issue Debate: Marine Safety (25 Jun 2013)
Martin Ferris: I thank the Minister for his reply. I reiterate the importance of the use of personal beacons by all fishing crew. Where a vessel flounders, an on-board device is activated immediately which gives its location and thus assists in the rescue effort. However, if a boat sinks and somebody is lost, the chances of recovering his or her remains are not good. In the south east, for example, the...

- Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Joint Sub-Committee on Fisheries: Fishery Management Plan: Discussion with Iascarí Intíre Cois Cladach na hÉireann (25 Jun 2013)
Martin Ferris: I thank Mr. O'Corcora and Mr. Connolly for the presentation. It is good to have people representing not just vested interests in fishing but the communities they come from. The IIE effectively does that, representing the largest number of people involved in the sector. They all come from the coastal communities most affected by the prevailing policies and the lack of policy to ensure...

- Other Questions: Human Rights Issues (26 Jun 2013)
Martin Ferris: I thank the Minister for his response. I understand that the other prison where Michael Campbell is being held is almost as bad as Lukiškės Prison, and the conditions, particularly regarding non-contact visits using a phone through glass or Perspex, along with sanitation conditions in the prison, are a disgrace. In Lukiškės Prison, a number of prisoners in a cell all...
- Other Questions: Human Rights Issues (26 Jun 2013)
Martin Ferris: I thank the Minister for the fact that an official will attend the trial. The appeal is not by the prisoner, Michael Campbell, but by the State to increase the sentence he received. There is no doubt that the publicity and interventions, particularly by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, have had a welcome effect on the conditions in which he is held. After tomorrow I will be...
