- Topical Issue Debate: Insurance Industry Regulation (28 May 2014)
John Perry: I will some clarify some matters. The Central Bank has been in discussions with the MFSA about Setanta since November 2013 when it identified issues during a consumer protection-themed inspection and immediately referred the matter to the MFSA for further investigation. There was regular contact in the following months. Issues led to the announcement in January that the firm would cease...
- Seanad: Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) (Amendment) Bill 2014: Second Stage (10 Jun 2014)
John Perry: I congratulate Senator Zappone on this important legislation. There seems to be a consensus here, including Senators Keane and Quinn, that this is a milestone. I do not doubt that this debate will be of great benefit to the Minister and those drafting the Bill in forming a consensus on the legislation as it passes through Seanad Éireann and Dáil Éireann as Government...
- Written Answers — Department of Social Protection: Illness Benefit Appeals (12 Jun 2014)
John Perry: 112. To ask the Minister for Social Protection when a decision will issue on illness benefit in respect of a person (details supplied) in County Sligo; if documentation submitted on 25 March 2014 will be responded to; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [25032/14]
- Industrial Development (Forfás Dissolution) Bill 2013: From the Seanad (19 Jun 2014)
John Perry: I am pleased to seek the acceptance by the Dáil of the six amendments to this Bill that were made by the Seanad. If they are accepted, provision will be made for the staff of Forfás to transfer to various bodies under certain terms and conditions of service, including terms and conditions relating to remuneration, that are no less favourable than the terms and conditions of...
- Industrial Development (Forfás Dissolution) Bill 2013: From the Seanad (19 Jun 2014)
John Perry: Yes, they will.
- Industrial Development (Forfás Dissolution) Bill 2013: From the Seanad (Resumed) (19 Jun 2014)
John Perry: I thank the Members of the Dáil for their valuable contributions to the Industrial Development Bill which provides for the dissolution of Forfás and related matters. While the Bill is quite technical in nature it is important legislation which will give effect to the decision to integrate the policy and research functions of Forfás into the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and...
- Seanad: Offences Against the State (Amendment) Act 1998: Motion (19 Jun 2014)
John Perry: The House will be aware that the Offences Against the State (Amendment) Act 1998 was enacted in the wake of the murder of 29 people by the Real IRA in Omagh on 15 August that year. It was a necessary response to that atrocity and the loss of 29 innocent lives. The bombing and those murders represented a direct attack also on the fragile peace process and, indeed, on this State as a major...
- Seanad: Offences Against the State (Amendment) Act 1998: Motion (19 Jun 2014)
John Perry: I thank the House for giving time to consider this important amendment. As I said, there remains a substantial threat from terrorist activity, in particular dissident Republican paramilitary groups, which warrants the continuance in force of the provisions of the Act. The message needs to be sent loud and clear that the State will not bow to the self-serving interests of such individuals...
- Seanad: Criminal Justice (Amendment) Act 2009: Motion (19 Jun 2014)
John Perry: The resolution will provide for the continuation in operation of section 8 of the Criminal Justice (Amendment) Act 2009 for a 12-month period beginning on 30 June 2014. Let me remind the House of the background to the 2009 Act. It was a response to a number of difficulties that were being experienced and circumstances in which the entire justice system was under serious threat. Organised...
- Seanad: Criminal Justice (Amendment) Act 2009: Motion (19 Jun 2014)
John Perry: Without this legislation, actions by organised criminals to subvert our democratic principles and criminal justice system will certainly go unanswered. No responsible Government could stand aside and allow murderous gangs to dictate how our criminal justice system should operate. It is the height of irresponsibility to act otherwise. I wish to express my gratitude to the House for passing...
- Topical Issue Debate: Job Losses^ (24 Jun 2014)
John Perry: I thank the Deputies for raising this matter. My understanding is that following the appointment of a receiver last week by the bank concerned, an interim examiner was appointed by the High Court to the company in question on 20 June. I believe examinership is a good option for companies that have real prospects for the future but find themselves in financial difficulty at a point in time....
- Topical Issue Debate: Job Losses^ (24 Jun 2014)
John Perry: I appreciate the concerns of all the Deputies and everyone involved, but the court will have the final say in the appointment of an examiner and we must be careful to respect this. The High Court has fixed 26 June for the hearing of the petition in order that notice be given to the interested parties. We must allow this process to happen. Clearly, the contributions of the Deputies and due...
- Topical Issue Debate: Jobs Protection (24 Jun 2014)
John Perry: I thank the Deputy for raising the matter. I am very conscious of the anxiety that any threat to the workforce in C&C Group's operations in Clonmel would create for the workers, their families and the local community. In terms of safeguarding the rights of the employees, Ireland has a robust suite of employment rights legislation. For employees who are concerned about the safety of...
- Topical Issue Debate: Jobs Protection (24 Jun 2014)
John Perry: It is all about cordiality and a certain level of business dialogue that should take place at any company.
- Topical Issue Debate: Jobs Protection (24 Jun 2014)
John Perry: The reference made to the CEO is appalling.
- Topical Issue Debate: Jobs Protection (24 Jun 2014)
John Perry: It is.
- Topical Issue Debate: Jobs Protection (24 Jun 2014)
John Perry: The investment by the company in Clonmel is substantial, as demonstrated by acquisitions in Ireland. The company has just released a figure of 30% for the Irish representation, mainly Bulmers. I am a great believer in discussions, dialogue and contact, but with that attack on the CEO, it does not surprise me that he would not meet the Deputy.
- Topical Issue Debate: Jobs Protection (24 Jun 2014)
John Perry: That is my clear observation.
- Topical Issue Debate: Jobs Protection (24 Jun 2014)
John Perry: It is all about showing cordiality in how one does business, not the attack the Deputy made.
- Topical Issue Debate: Jobs Protection (24 Jun 2014)
John Perry: I am not impressed at all. One cannot argue with the figures. They are up 30% and a figure of 75% is represented by Ireland and Scotland. I understand the company is launching a new craft beer.
