Seanad: Order of Business (19 Oct 2010)

Donie Cassidy: Would it not be wonderful if the Holy Father took the opportunity to come to Ireland for the Eucharistic congress? It would uplift our people. We would all see the light of day in regard to the cold facts and the people could vote for the party that met the challenge to be faced. In response to Senator Bacik who also inquired about the date of the general election, it will give everyone an...

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Oct 2010)

Donie Cassidy: Senators Harris, Cummins, Bradford and Daly expressed serious concerns about protecting the integrity of the Irish passport. On the abuse that has taken place, we must support the Minister in everything that he and the Department are trying to do. Donie Cassidy: Senators Donohoe, O'Toole, Bacik, Boyle, Healy Eames, Coghlan, Corrigan and MacSharry expressed serious concerns and outlined various proposals to the House. I also wish the four party leaders who are meeting in the national interest well. While the meeting is unprecedented, as the Taoiseach stated, it is not politics as usual. We certainly face a serious challenge, but, like the Deputy...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Oct 2010)

Donie Cassidy: I heard Members praise the former Taoiseach, Mr. John Bruton, who was my local Deputy. I often thought it was a big mistake on the part of Fine Gael to treat him in the manner in which he was treated. I fully share the sentiments expressed by Members. He has been an excellent public representative and has a lot of talent and ability, but this is what happens when one is not appreciated in...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Oct 2010)

Donie Cassidy: Senators Norris, Ellis and Harris referred to the serious plight of the owners of taxis over nine years old. Most Members will be aware that decent cars are good for 15 years. Therefore, the proposal made does not make sense. I will send a strong message to the Minister urging him to contact the taxi regulator on the matter, particularly at this difficult time when, as many Members are...

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Oct 2010)

Donie Cassidy: I understand it is a staffing issue. The Houses do not sit on the Tuesday when a bank holiday falls on a Monday. I will find out the real reason for the Senator, but neither House will sit on Tuesday. We will be sitting at least three days each week until Christmas and four days some weeks.
