- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Roll-out of Covid-19 Vaccination: Discussion (16 Dec 2020)
Martin Conway: Is it possible that NPHET might recommend, as an immediate response, additional restrictions in the Border counties given the very worrying situation in the North?
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (17 Dec 2020)
Martin Conway: Just in case I do not get the opportunity to speak tomorrow, I want to wish the Cathaoirleach a very happy Christmas. This is his first Christmas as Cathaoirleach of the Seanad and he has done a great job so far. He has been very co-operative and supportive of Members and a great ambassador for Seanad Éireann. I thank him for that. I also want to acknowledge the work done by the...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (18 Dec 2020)
Martin Conway: I was listening in my office when Senators Crowe and Casey spoke. My heart sank when I heard what they had to say about the hospitality industry and what it has suffered because they are so right. The news last night was yet another blow to the sector and I agree with what others have said on the need for clarity. Clarity is important and I hope it will come in the next day or two....
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (19 Jan 2021)
Martin Conway: I, too, wish everybody all the best for 2021. Hopefully, it will be a better year than 2020. I hope also that it will be a better year for young people, particularly students. I have been particularly troubled over the past couple of weeks by the issue of a return to school. None of us really believed the schools would resume on 11 January and it transpired that that was the case. When...
- Seanad: Report of the Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation: Statements (19 Jan 2021)
Martin Conway: On a point of order, my good friend and colleague, Senator Boyhan, said there was no male Senator here at the beginning of the debate. For the record, I was here for the Minister's speech but I had to step out for about ten minutes to do a prearranged media interview. I have been here for the entire debate since.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Impact of High Levels of Covid-19 on the Health System: Discussion (22 Jan 2021)
Martin Conway: I thank the Chairman and reiterate his comments in terms of thanking our guests for the fantastic work they are doing on all our behalf. I have a couple of questions for Mr. Woods and then a couple for Dr. Glynn. I will start with Mr. Woods. I can only imagine it is worrying from his perspective that 6,000 staff in the acute hospitals are out sick at the moment. I imagine the vast...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Impact of High Levels of Covid-19 on the Health System: Discussion (22 Jan 2021)
Martin Conway: In terms of the private hospital capacity, does Mr. Woods have to hand figures on how much of the private hospital capacity the HSE is using at present either for Covid or non-Covid public patients? I understand that the HSE is at surge capacity and I would be interested in those figures. On a general point, is Mr. Woods confident that the high level of care that has been provided in our...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Impact of High Levels of Covid-19 on the Health System: Discussion (22 Jan 2021)
Martin Conway: Would it be correct to say then that no intensive care patients are getting one-to-one treatment and care from an intensive care trained nurse but that they are getting one-to-one treatment and care from nurses who are supervised by intensive care trained nurses?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Impact of High Levels of Covid-19 on the Health System: Discussion (22 Jan 2021)
Martin Conway: That is fine. I thank Dr. Hamilton and Mr. Woods. I have a couple of questions for Dr. Glynn. I thank Dr. Glynn for all the great work he is doing. On 30 December, the restrictions in existence now were introduced by the Government. Is Dr. Glynn disappointed that there are still 2,000 to 2,500 cases a day given the fact that we are now over three weeks into new level 5 plus...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Impact of High Levels of Covid-19 on the Health System: Discussion (22 Jan 2021)
Martin Conway: Is Dr. Glynn concerned there is still too much activity around, say, Dublin city centre in terms of traffic and movement?

- Seanad: Covid-19 Vaccination Programme: Statements (26 Jan 2021)
Martin Conway: I welcome the Minister of State to the House on this important issue. I agree with my colleague, Senator Clifford-Lee, about the Irish language. To add to that, the information should also be available in Braille so that the blind community has full access to it. I do not doubt that the Minister of State will send this message to the officials to ensure that happens. There have been many...
- Seanad: Report of the Mother and Baby Homes Commission of Investigation: Statements (Resumed) (26 Jan 2021)
Martin Conway: Like others I acknowledge your presence in the Chair today, which is most appropriate. I acknowledge that you have spoken regularly on many other issues, but this one in particular. You have a particular insight, which has enormously benefited the discourse. I commend you on that. I welcome the Minister to the House. Nobody could question his sincerity in trying to right the wrongs of...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Vaccination Programme: Update (29 Jan 2021)
Martin Conway: I welcome our guests and commend them on the great work that they are doing. We had examples of where family members ended up getting vaccinated at the end of a day in order not to waste the vaccines. Will they receive a second dose as the other front-line workers will?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Vaccination Programme: Update (29 Jan 2021)
Martin Conway: Mr. Walsh might get back to us about it.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Vaccination Programme: Update (29 Jan 2021)
Martin Conway: On the sequencing, I have no doubt that much time and effort went in to ensuring the most appropriate people were lined up first. Have the witnesses had any political lobbying to alter the sequencing or move specific groups up for various reasons? Has any intense pressure been brought to make any changes to the sequencing?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: Covid-19 Vaccination Programme: Update (29 Jan 2021)
Martin Conway: That is very encouraging because the political system needs to sell the message that the sequencing has been done in an appropriate way and we need to defend it. When the officials from the HSE appeared in front of the committee before Christmas, they expressed confidence that the ICT system would be up and running prior to the vaccination process beginning. Clearly, that did not happen....
