- Seanad: Services for People with Disabilities: Motion (7 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: My contribution will not be in my own words but in the words of the Disability Federation of Ireland and of those involved at the coalface. Our role should be to act as a voice, as Senator O'Brien very eloquently and very emotionally put it in her contribution. I immediately thought of Senator Mary Moran when I read the motion. We share a common bond in that both of us are parents of a...
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: While I understand the reason behind the removal of the DNA database Bill from the Order Paper, I fail to understand why the Deputy Leader can unashamedly propose three motions without debate. If she was on this side of the House, she would object because she would have a great deal to say about them.
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: We are not having a debate now. The Deputy Leader is asking the House to agree motions returning from the relevant committee without debate. The purpose of such motions is to have a debate. I would like a reassurance that they will be debated and not sidelined because a Minister cannot be found.
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: The main news of the past 24 hours has been the shock resignation of the former Minister for Justice and Equality and Defence, Deputy Shatter. It gives me no great pleasure to comment, adversely or otherwise, on behalf of Fianna Fáil about him. I have known him for a long time. I served under him when he was Chairman of the Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and I travelled with him...
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: That is no way to carry on business. The Government is a shambles and perhaps we are approaching the time for it to go.
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: Hear, hear.
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: The Senator never mentioned the Deputy Leader.
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: There is still no other business. The Deputy Leader could not find a Minister to give us any other business.
- Seanad: Order of Business (8 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: I wish to make a point of order. While I empathise with the Deputy Leader in her dilemma on the motions, it was unacceptable to put those motions before the House without debate and treat the House with a certain contempt. If one cannot find a Minister of State to sit in supervision over a motion that comes from a House committee, then something is seriously wrong at the heart of Government.
- Seanad: State Airports (Shannon Group) Bill 2014: Second Stage (13 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: Once again, Senator, my apologies for interrupting you.
- Seanad: State Airports (Shannon Group) Bill 2014: Second Stage (13 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: The Senator is fine for time. The debate will be adjourned if it does not reach a conclusion today.
- Seanad: State Airports (Shannon Group) Bill 2014: Second Stage (13 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: Nobody else is offering to speak. According to the Order of Business, this debate is due to finish at 5.30 p.m. Therefore, Minister has three minutes in which to conclude. Alternatively, we could suspend at 5.30 p.m. and he could complete his Second Stage speech on another day.
- Seanad: State Airports (Shannon Group) Bill 2014: Second Stage (13 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: I am grateful to the Minister for his brevity and the content of his contribution, which was very comprehensive. I thank him for facilitating the House.
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: Yesterday I had intended to raise an issue, but I was unable to do so because time ran out. The issue was one that had received extensive coverage in the national media and related to the sequel to the death in Mullingar of Mr. Andrew Dolan from Carrick-on-Shannon. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam. The case finally came to a conclusion yesterday, but serious issues arise from it which have...
- Seanad: Seanad Electoral (Panel Members) (Amendment) Bill 2014: Second Stage (14 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: I compliment Senator Barrett on introducing the Bill and I welcome the Minister of State. Fianna Fáil published its own Seanad reform Bill and remains committed to it. However, we will be supporting the Senator's Bill because we are anxious to ensure that the issue of Seanad reform remains on the agenda. We are happy to work with other Members in this regard and to find common ground...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Mountain Rescue Services: Mountain Rescue Ireland (14 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: I endorse the Chairman’s welcome. I believe I speak for everybody in saying that what Mountain Rescue Ireland does is valued. I do not believe it is at all undervalued. Anybody who is near a mountain range is aware of the existence of mountain search and rescue teams. I live in Drumshanbo, County Leitrim, where there is an annual church gate collection. I presume it happens...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Mountain Rescue Services: Mountain Rescue Ireland (14 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: Yes, it was.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Mountain Rescue Services: Mountain Rescue Ireland (14 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: If I may ask a brief supplementary question, why would Mr. Christie be defensive about corporate subsidies? For example, various charities have vehicles sponsored by companies. Mr. Christie made reference to not having a sufficient number of Land Rovers.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Mountain Rescue Services: Mountain Rescue Ireland (14 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: Surely it would be a consideration for his organisation-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Mountain Rescue Services: Mountain Rescue Ireland (14 May 2014)
Paschal Mooney: I ask the question in the context of Mr. Christie's emphasis on the lack of financial resources. Also, I was curious that church gate collections would be subject to VAT.
