Committee on Education and Youth: Education for Children with Special Educational Needs: Minister of State at the Department of Education and Youth (25 Jun 2025)

Jen Cummins: I recently had a correspondence with someone recently and would like a bit a clarity on an issue. When students are in a special school and they reach 18 years of age, is that the cut-off point? Do they have to leave or can they finish their course? If they have to go when they are 18 or when their course finishes, what is the pathway for those students to go to further education or work...

Committee on Education and Youth: Education for Children with Special Educational Needs: Minister of State at the Department of Education and Youth (25 Jun 2025)

Jen Cummins: The one issue I would like an answer on, which other members have inquired about, is the lateness in the allocation of SNAs. It is putting pressure on SNAs, especially if they are going to be redeployed. It is so late in the day that it also puts pressure on boards of management, principals and SNAs. Can anything done for next year? Is there a plan in place?

Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Review of Action Plan for Apprenticeship 2021-2025: Discussion (25 Jun 2025)

Jen Cummins: I thank all our guests for their interesting comments. Every day is a school day at all committees. I worked in education for years, including in a school completion programme. We always wanted young people to remain in education for as long as possible. I am delighted that, over the last 30 years or so, the prevalence of apprenticeships has increased. However, people were often...

Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Review of Action Plan for Apprenticeship 2021-2025: Discussion (25 Jun 2025)

Jen Cummins: I have two last questions on community training centres, Youthreach and DEIS schools. Over the years, I have been involved in Youthreach and CTCs and encouraged young people to go to them. What QQI level must applicants attain before they can be accepted for an apprenticeship? Years ago, people could train a bit younger. Is the age now a bit older?

An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (1 Jul 2025)

Jen Cummins: Some of the parents in our school system are having to act like fundraisers because the schools are not fully funded. I know the Government has increased the capitation grant, which is welcome. However, having spoken to many different schools, DEIS schools in particular, I know that fundraising is very difficult because families are struggling with general day-to-day costs. The same is...

Review of Education for Persons with Special Educational Needs Act 2004: Statements (1 Jul 2025)

There have been promises that special education will improve. I know the Minister of State and his officials are trying their best in every way to...

GPO and Moore Street Regeneration as a 1916 Cultural Quarter: Motion [Private Members] (1 Jul 2025)

Jen Cummins: It is a defining moment for the preservation of our history. The GPO is fundamental to our past but it is not a relic. It has huge potential. I am lucky to live in Dublin South-Central, where Deputy Ó Snodaigh also lives and where history and historic buildings are preserved and celebrated. They include the Royal Hospital Kilmainham, Kilmainham Gaol, and St. Patrick's Cathedral. Of...

Select Committee on Education and Youth: Estimates for Public Services 2025
Vote 26 - Education (Revised)
(26 Jun 2025)

Jen Cummins: Yes. There is the perspective of the school but also the parents' perspective. Every year Barnardos issues a statement highlighting that the cost of returning to school is a problem for parents. There are grants. It is trying to mitigate against ever having a situation where families are struggling to get back to school with those increased costs.

All-Island Strategic Rail Review: Statements (Resumed) (2 Jul 2025)

Jen Cummins: I represent Dublin South-Central which is a densely populated area. A huge amount of building is going on, particularly in areas like Bluebell, Inchicore, Ballyfermot, Park West and around that area. Our access to rail is actually quite limited. The Luas goes through it but it is constantly jammed. Bus services are being re-evaluated at the moment in terms of BusConnect and people are...
