- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Pre-legislative Scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Certain Institutional Burials (Authorised Interventions) Bill (Resumed) (18 May 2021)
Mary Seery Kearney: I am in Leinster House. I thank the Minister for his comprehensive submission to the committee. I wish to be clear about a couple of things. As recently as last night, there was reference to Tuam on the RTÉ series about former State Pathologist, Dr. Marie Cassidy. She discussed the mammoth task it will be to identify the remains in Tuam. I am ever mindful, as we talk here about...

Mary Seery Kearney: That is great; I thank the Minister very much. I do not know if I have time for another question.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Pre-legislative Scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Certain Institutional Burials (Authorised Interventions) Bill (Resumed) (18 May 2021)
Mary Seery Kearney: There are a number of representative groups of the various families and others at Tuam. Is it the Minister's proposal to get into discussions at other sites? I am coming back to the exercise of discretion as to what is needed at other sites and what intervention by the commission would happen at other sites. Does the Minister propose doing that in collaboration with survivor groups or...

Mary Seery Kearney: Towards the end of my first slot, we started to talk about the agency and the logistics of that. I ask the Minister to give more detail on how the agency itself will work inside a human rights framework.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Children and Youth Affairs: Pre-legislative Scrutiny of the General Scheme of the Certain Institutional Burials (Authorised Interventions) Bill (Resumed) (18 May 2021)
Mary Seery Kearney: I think of the words in the preamble to the Constitution about cherishing all of the children. In their time, these children clearly were not cherished and neither were their mothers but we have an opportunity, in what we do now, to restore their dignity, to respect them and to cherish their value to us as a State. I appreciate the Minister's words and thoughts on that.

- Seanad: Health and Criminal Justice (Covid-19) (Amendment) Bill 2021: Second Stage (24 May 2021)
Mary Seery Kearney: I allowed Senator McDowell some indulgence because I have a lot of sympathy for what he had to say. The next speaking slot is Senator Kyne who is sharing time with Senator Burke. Is that agreed? Agreed.

- Seanad: Health and Criminal Justice (Covid-19) (Amendment) Bill 2021: Second Stage (24 May 2021)
Mary Seery Kearney: Before I hand over to the Minister, I congratulate him for the vaccine programme. It has brought a great sense of relief as people are vaccinated, and within my own family. We stood outside, where there was a powerful demonstration with pilots. I think we need to open up our aviation sector. I support antigen testing. Obviously, we must tell people how to do it properly. I believe the...
- Seanad: Affordable Housing Bill 2021: Second Stage (Resumed) (24 May 2021)
Mary Seery Kearney: I welcome the Minister back to the House. I support this legislation, which together with the Land Development Agency Bill 2021, will provide much-needed social and affordable housing to purchase and rent in this State. Most modest earners are locked out of the housing market. They do not earn enough such that three and a half times their salary will yield them a mortgage that will buy...
- Seanad: Affordable Housing Bill 2021: Second Stage (Resumed) (24 May 2021)
Mary Seery Kearney: I bet it does not.
- Seanad: Organisation of Working Time (Reproductive Health Related Leave) Bill 2021: Second Stage (24 May 2021)
Mary Seery Kearney: I thank the Labour Party Senators. I welcome the opportunity to endorse the introduction of statutory leave to support the experience of miscarriage and reproductive health. I believe that this leave will be provided for during the tenure of this Government as it is the next logical provision to build on what has been an evolving framework for family supports, under my own party in...

- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (25 May 2021)
Mary Seery Kearney: I highlight a group of people who have been a little forgotten. Throughout Covid, people have been admitted to hospital who are elderly and may suffer from early forms of dementia and other illnesses such that their release from hospital is dependent on their getting home care packages, and it may be their first home care package. There has been a delay in that regard, although that is a...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Disability Matters: Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act 2015: Decision Support Service (20 May 2021)
Mary Seery Kearney: I apologise as I am between two committees. That bilocation element means I may ask something that has already been answered but I am trying to avoid that. The witnesses have spoken extensively on the ward of court and how that will work. I thank them. I am not clear whether families will have to apply to be the committee or insert themselves into decision-making on behalf of an...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Housing, Planning and Local Government: General Scheme of the Electoral Reform Bil 2020: Discussion (Resumed) (20 May 2021)
Mary Seery Kearney: I am mindful my time is short. There needs to be a clarification about data controllers. Today when we are talking about the national offices and national political parties, we are operating in an environment where the national party is the data controller of the information it holds. Each individual member, whether a candidate, a local representative or a representative at national level,...
