Seanad: Media Standards: Statements, Questions and Answers (22 Feb 2012)

John Gilroy: I will be brief as I have only a minute. It is said that war is an extension of politics by another means and so it seems is the Sunday Independent. Every time we open the Sunday Independent, we see articles by Deputies Shane Ross and Willie O'Dea, by Senators John Crown and John Whelan, by former politicians Eoghan Harris and Michael McDowell and, I am sure, several others. I am vaguely...

Seanad: Media Standards: Statements, Questions and Answers (22 Feb 2012)

John Gilroy: Are the sanctions strong enough to act as a deterrent?

Seanad: Order of Business (28 Feb 2012)

John Gilroy: For God's sake, it has started already.

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)

John Gilroy: Hear, hear.

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)

John Gilroy: I welcome the referendum as a moment which is good for Irish democracy. This really is an iconic moment in our times which will define our future with Europe. We need to be careful about how we debate and the language we use around this referendum. Undoubtedly, in the period running up to the referendum there will be uncertainty in the markets, and internationally, about the state of...

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)

John Gilroy: Absolutely. I commend Senator Darragh O'Brien's responsible and reasonable position on this and let us keep the debate honest, factual and reasonable.

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)

John Gilroy: Informed arguments.

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)

John Gilroy: -----on section 25 of the treaty.

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)

John Gilroy: Not too many of them realistic, though.

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)

John Gilroy: On a point of order, when he says "mislead the people", I wonder has Senator MacSharry forgotten it was his Government that removed these services in the first place.

Seanad: Order of Business. (29 Feb 2012)

John Gilroy: Perhaps the Senator might leave his telephone number with the Leader in order that he can pass it on to Chancellor Merkel.

Seanad: Rare Diseases: Motion (7 Mar 2012)

John Gilroy: I welcome the Minister of State to the Chamber. I am glad that we can discuss this topic today. By its very definition it is a topic that does not often get a public airing. Those who do talk about it are the victims of rare diseases, as well as their families and support groups. It must be frustrating to find oneself with a serious condition and be isolated as well. It is important to...

Seanad: Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union: Statements (14 Mar 2012)

John Gilroy: I welcome the opportunity to participate in this debate and pay tribute to the Leader of the House for facilitating it. This is a very important discussion and it is welcome that the main Opposition party in both Houses is also supporting this very important treaty. This is probably the most important decision facing Ireland as a country, as a "No" vote would leave us outside the main...

Seanad: Treaty on Stability, Coordination and Governance in the Economic and Monetary Union: Statements (14 Mar 2012)

John Gilroy: It does not. That is scaremongering.

Seanad: Finance Bill 2012: Second Stage (21 Mar 2012)

John Gilroy: I will depart briefly from my prepared script to comment on the thorough negativity expressed by Senator Byrne. I never heard the like of it.

Seanad: Finance Bill 2012: Second Stage (21 Mar 2012)

John Gilroy: Senator Byrne needs to refresh his memory. The cutbacks he outlined were required because of the mismanagement of the economy by his own party. Perhaps if previous Governments had been more careful we would not be in this position. I welcome the Finance Bill 2012 and look forward to a healthy and robust debate on its contents. It is widely accepted by most reasonable commentators that the...

Seanad: Finance Bill 2012: Second Stage (21 Mar 2012)

John Gilroy: This Bill forms one part of a suite of measures. Other areas that will aid recovery are an emphasis on job creation, on closing the deficit in our public finances and a renegotiation of the terms of our bailout. While we are on the road to recovery, it will be a long and hard road. At least we have started and this Bill will keep us firmly on that road.

Seanad: Programme for Government: Motion (21 Mar 2012)

John Gilroy: His was an unconstitutional Bill.

Seanad: Clotting Factor Concentrates and Other Biological Products Bill 2012: Second and Subsequent Stages (21 Mar 2012)

John Gilroy: I thank the Minister of State for her detailed statement on the Bill. I commend Senator Norris on his eagle-eyed sharpness in noting that she omitted two paragraphs from her script. She pointed out the Bill does not give rise to cost or resource implications for St. James's Hospital. The legislation provides for the transfer of responsibility for the procurement of clotting factor...
