- Seanad: Immigrant Workers: Motion. (4 May 2005)
Mary O'Rourke: I move amendment No. 1 to amendment No. 1: In line 4, after "Ireland" to insert ", wherever it occurs". It should have been Senator Leyden speaking at this point, but he has disappeared. I am glad to contribute to this evening's debate, as I did on a previous occasion. We had a general debate during our first week back after Easter, as requested. I take Senator Quinn's point. Even though the...

Mary O'Rourke: Nobody has said well done to Deputy Joe Higgins, but I do. He took on the issue, carved it out and persisted. Whether or not we are grumpy about it, we should say well done to him.
- Seanad: Immigrant Workers: Motion. (4 May 2005)
Mary O'Rourke: Nobody else had the energy or commitment to address the issue as he has done. He was in Dunnes Stores in Athlone handing out his recruitment leaflets and newspaper. He got up on the platform and delivered a fine rabble-rousing speech and then departed. He travels far and wide in pursuit of disadvantage. The motion and amendment are well couched, apart from the omission. I am glad to note the...

Mary O'Rourke: I am worn out writing letters and beseeching the Minister.
- Seanad: Immigrant Workers: Motion. (4 May 2005)
Mary O'Rourke: What a pity. As I said earlier, my amendment to the amendment refers to the second point which condemns exploitation of all workers in Ireland. If we passed the amendment as worded, May Day would go to our heads. I am amending it to refer to exploitation wherever it occurs. This is due to the advice of our learned friend, Senator Quinn.

Mary O'Rourke: May I repeat the amendment?
- Seanad: Immigrant Workers: Motion. (4 May 2005)
Mary O'Rourke: The original amendment included the words: "condemns exploitation of all workers in Ireland". It was brought to our attention by Senator Quinn that this implied that all workers were being exploited at all times. It has been proposed to amend this wording to read: "condemns exploitation of all workers in Ireland, wherever it occurs".

- Seanad: Order of Business. (5 May 2005)
Mary O'Rourke: The Order of Business is No.1, a referral motion re motion 9 on the Order Paper. The motion concerns the Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse which was established in May 2000 for a period of two years, and which was subsequently extended in December 2001 for a period of three years, until 23 May 2005. The chairperson of the commission wrote to the Minister seeking a further extension of...

Mary O'Rourke: Senator Brian Hayes raised the matter of accident and emergency services and the Taoiseach's answer in the Dáil on 4 May that three out of four people at specified times are drunk when they check in. They are causing a danger not just to themselves, as they brought on their conditions themselves, but to staff and other patients. The Senator asked that these views be conveyed to the...

Mary O'Rourke: Senator O'Toole raised the issue of the Marino Institute of Education and suggested the House should adjourn to allow Members deal with it. I telephoned the Minister for Education and Science's private secretary yesterday. The Minister is giving a lecture in Poland and will not be back in Ireland until the night of 6 May. I was told that she had just cleared, checked and made changes to the...

Mary O'Rourke: Senator Coghlan called for debates on pensions and the forthcoming work permits legislation. The Senator was present yesterday when I asked the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment to bring the legislation to the House. There is a legislative meeting today during which this matter can be aired. Senator à Murchú thought it ungenerous of young people to berate their teachers. The...
- Seanad: Order of Business. (5 May 2005)
Mary O'Rourke: ââto the ante-room now, he can ask the Minister himself. Senator Ross supported Senator Terry's call for a debate on the pensions industry. He went on to make strong statements about the industry and all those who have their fingers in the pension pie. If he expresses himself with the same robustness, this will be an interesting debate. I cannot answer him in such a fashion.
