Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Funding Granted by Sport Ireland to the Football Association of Ireland and Related Matters: Discussion (3 Apr 2019)

Frank Feighan: I apologise - the Olympic Federation of Ireland. Any time we heard the organisation's name in the past was in controversial circumstances so it is nice to hear that things are going well for it. The FAI had a liquidity problem and occasional problems with finances. Is it the same in other federations, say, the Football Association of Wales or the Football Association in England? I know...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Third Level Institutions (4 Apr 2019)

Frank Feighan: I am delighted to see the Minister of State and that she is taking this Commencement matter. St. Angela’s College in Sligo is the only home economics college in the country and the need for capital funding for larger capacity classrooms-laboratories to accommodate students has never been greater. A national shortage of home economics teachers and a much more health conscious...

Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Third Level Institutions (4 Apr 2019)

Frank Feighan: I thank the Minister of State for her reply. It is nice to hear that departmental officials have visited St. Angela's College on 15 March 2019. I look forward to seeing a proposal from St. Angela's College and NUI Galway to try to draw down funding for the best way to go forward. I think we are moving in a significantly positive direction. I again thank the Minister of State for her reply.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 Apr 2019)

Frank Feighan: I normally would not comment on the Garda or the PSNI. However, I am concerned about the recent theft of ATMs. Last week, as I was driving back from a function, I passed a garage on the Feeny Road in Dungiven from which another ATM had been stolen. This is the eighth theft of an ATM in Northern Ireland and there have been many more in Cavan and Monaghan. What is happening? Do the banks...

Frank Feighan: I thank the Chairman.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with the Football Association of Ireland (10 Apr 2019)

Frank Feighan: I apologise that I do not have a pair so I must vote in the Upper House at some stage. In light of some of the questions I asked Sport Ireland a week ago, I was concerned that the FAI did not have an independent member on the board, as was mentioned in the Mazars report. Why did that not happen? Perhaps this question has already been asked of the witnesses.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with the Football Association of Ireland (10 Apr 2019)

Frank Feighan: Yes. I am sorry, I meant the Genesis report.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with the Football Association of Ireland (10 Apr 2019)

Frank Feighan: I understand that but let us say that Sport Ireland, that is, the taxpayer and the Government, is giving €2.7 million per year, then surely there should be such an independent board member. I say this is a difficulty on behalf of the Government. Surely there should be an independent member on the board in the interest of the outcome of the Genesis report and in the interests of...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with the Football Association of Ireland (10 Apr 2019)

Frank Feighan: Sponsors are stakeholders and they are very important to a body such as the FAI. Have they expressed any concern at the current situation in the FAI? Has there been any negative impact from sponsors?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with the Football Association of Ireland (10 Apr 2019)

Frank Feighan: I refer to FIFA and UEFA. Mr. Delaney is the executive vice president of the FAI with responsibility for FIFA and UEFA matters. FIFA certainly has not been the most open group. Sepp Blatter was the general secretary since 1981 and president since 1998. He has been suspended since 2015 for corruption and financial mismanagement and he has been ejected from office for eight years. How...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with the Football Association of Ireland (10 Apr 2019)

Frank Feighan: Every time one hears of the FAI there is another report coming be it Jonathan Hall Associates, Mazars or Grant Thornton. These reports must be expensive. Does Mr. Conway have a ball park figure on how much the reports will cost? I am sure the Government and this committee will also incur significant expenditure.
