Written Answers — Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade: Grant Payments (17 Feb 2015)

Patrick O'Donovan: 415. To ask the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade if advertisements were placed, inviting sporting clubs based outside Ireland to apply for grant-aid for the development of their sporting facilities; if he will confirm where these advertisements were placed; the number of applications received; the criteria used to adjudicate on these applications; the total number of successful...

Patrick O'Donovan: 476. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government in view of recent announcements that the planning tribunal was withdrawing all findings of obstruction and nonco-operation by persons who appeared before the tribunal, the level of expenses that will now become payable to the legal representatives of each of these persons; the subsequent effect on the total expenditure...

Patrick O'Donovan: 477. To ask the Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government the total expenditure on the legal team acting for the planning tribunal; and in view of the findings of this tribunal now having been withdrawn with huge additional implications for the costs to the tax payer, if he will seek to recoup all or at least some of this additional money from the legal team. [6834/15]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Patrick O'Donovan: While I apologise for being late, I caught most of the presentation on the monitor. The witnesses might forgive me if some of the questions I intend to ask already have been asked. On the presumption the witnesses have watched the joint committee's proceedings up to now in respect of the stakeholders that have appeared before members, I also presume they saw the presentation last week by...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Patrick O'Donovan: On that basis, would it not make more sense to extend the guarantee to ten or 15 years because one then would have surety from the company's point of view as much as from that of the airport?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Patrick O'Donovan: If I was the airport operator, why would I not ask for a deal?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Patrick O'Donovan: But is there not a win-win for both the airport and the airline if there is certainty regarding costs and everything into the future?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Patrick O'Donovan: Why?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Patrick O'Donovan: In terms of the region, is that not what this boils down to? The next time Aer Lingus goes back, the deal will be so onerous for Shannon that it will be unable to live up to the expectation and then the airline will state it is obliged to leave.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Patrick O'Donovan: No, the important point here is that were Mr. Kavanagh the chief executive of British Airways - perhaps he will be some day in the future, given that is the natural progression - he would be negotiating with a Government. Essentially, that is what is going on here over the airwaves. I am sure the officials in the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, who at 7.20 p.m. may have nothing...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Patrick O'Donovan: I read it.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Patrick O'Donovan: Was that the unanimous view of the board?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Patrick O'Donovan: The chairman of the Aer Lingus board might like to consider reverting to the committee on this issue. This is far too important an issue. For example, if the committee arrived at a decision and seven members dissented, it would still be indicated. This is a minority share owned by the Government and we have a right to know what happened.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Patrick O'Donovan: We have an obligation to consider what has been discussed and deliberated on, but we are working in the dark. Aer Lingus would do itself a favour if it came clean and told us the whole truth. It came out of the blue and told us half the story the other day.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Patrick O'Donovan: It is not unanimous then.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: Proposed Sale of Aer Lingus: (Resumed) Aer Lingus and Stobart Air (17 Feb 2015)

Patrick O'Donovan: Does Mr. Barrington accept that from the committee’s point of view he is leaving us in a position where the board of a company, of which the State owns 25%, has made a decision but the committee does not know whether there was dissent, no more than there is dissent among the public, about the bid? Would it not be in the company’s best interests to put in the public domain how...

Other Questions: Naval Service Vessels (18 Feb 2015)

Patrick O'Donovan: 6. To ask the Minister for Defence if home ports have been assigned by the Defence Forces to the new Naval vessels which have been acquired by the State; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6799/15]

Other Questions: Naval Service Vessels (18 Feb 2015)

Patrick O'Donovan: This question relates to the recent decommissioning of LE Aoifein Waterford Port and the tradition of establishing a connection between Naval vessels and their home ports. I know the Department of Defence and the military have plans for further fleet refurbishment and replacement. Can the Minister provide an update on the work being done on the assignment of home ports, which is a...
