Pharmacy Bill 2007 [Seanad]: Report and Final Stages (4 Apr 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: The Minister's answer was very particular on the question of "may" or "shall". Amendment No. 11 is not as prescriptive because it states "the Minister considers appropriate". That leaves the door open to the Minister's judgment. It is not as clearly defined as amendment No. 10. Accordingly, the response does not suit the argument.

Pharmacy Bill 2007 [Seanad]: Report and Final Stages (4 Apr 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: It includes with any other professional body the Minister considers appropriate. If the Minister thinks it appropriate, she would surely do it.

Pharmacy Bill 2007 [Seanad]: Report and Final Stages (4 Apr 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I support this amendment, perhaps the most important we have reached. It seeks to eliminate what in the worst cases would be corrupt relationships between pharmacists and general practitioners. I have met the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland which has outlined some of its findings in pharmacy inspections. Clearly, we should all be concerned at the evidence presented, especially relating...

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Question 20: To ask the Tánaiste and Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will make a statement detailing the availability of internet facilities to members of An Garda Síochána across the State and the level of e-literacy amongst the force; and if he will make provisions for more facilities and training to ensure that the work of Gardaí will no longer be unnecessarily...

[12982/07]

[13197/07]

Order of Business (5 Apr 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: On No. 18, I recall when this was referred to committee only last week that there was an indication that full address of all that is entailed in the Schengen information system mark II would be accommodated. Yet it is coming back to us here and being pressed for approval without debate. That is certainly not in line with my understanding of the Government's intent. As I understood it,...

Order of Business (5 Apr 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Unfortunately, I do not have access to all the committees, any more than Deputy Rabbitte does. This is the forum to which I have direct access and I would be happy to participate in a full engagement on the floor of this House.

Order of Business (5 Apr 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I wish to respond.

Order of Business (5 Apr 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: No. The Tánaiste is correct that my colleague, Deputy Ó Snodaigh, and I do not accept this proposal. I acknowledge he has agreed to extend the time for the Committee Stage debate. However, we believe the proposal in respect of the taking of Report Stage on 24 April is wholly inadequate in terms of addressing the Criminal Justice Bill 2007 and all it entails. We believe the Dáil should...

Order of Business (5 Apr 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Fair enough. The MacEntee report clearly indicates that there are many more questions to be addressed. The Taoiseach should accommodate the demand of Justice for the Forgotten for a full public inquiry. We should be debating that here.

Order of Business (5 Apr 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: It should be a matter for this House to discuss.

Order of Business (5 Apr 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: I am urging that a special day be provided for such a debate in the week prior to 24 April. I have no doubt the people of County Monaghan would be equally interested in it, a Cheann Comhairle, as Dublin Deputies. I urge the Tánaiste to revisit the proposal.

Order of Business (5 Apr 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: The Tánaiste would say that.

Order of Business (5 Apr 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: The Taoiseach has promised a full debate on collusion. With the publication of the MacEntee report yesterday, it is clear Mr. MacEntee did not secure access to all the information he would have required to properly report on the matters referred to him, not least owing to the destruction — although I understand the word "cull" has been employed — of material held in Garda files and the...

Order of Business (5 Apr 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: There can be no question but that the Dublin and Monaghan bombings represented——

Order of Business (5 Apr 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: It was tantamount to a declaration of war on this State by the British authorities. I urge the Minister to indicate that a full day will be allocated for a debate. The Government has already voted down an opportunity to hold a debate prior to the signalled resumption of business on 24 April. Will the Tánaiste confirm that a day will be allocated for such a debate in this Dáil, that is,...

Order of Business (5 Apr 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: Will the Tánaiste advise us as to what mechanism is available for Oireachtas scrutiny in the event of proceeding over the Easter recess with the proposed signing of contracts for the co-location of private hospital developments on public hospital sites?

Order of Business (5 Apr 2007)

Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin: That is not the case. The Tánaiste is not answering the question.
