Michelle Mulherin: Hear, hear.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Change Advisory Council Annual Review 2019: Discussion (16 Oct 2019)
Michelle Mulherin: On 9 May, which was Europe Day, a joint sitting of this committee and the Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine held an interesting debate. Dr. Sinéad McCarthy from Teagasc appeared before us. We considered the questions of food and carbon emissions from our beef industry. One issue that arose related to how most of the plant-based protein foods that we might rely on as...

Michelle Mulherin: I wish to make a point.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Change Advisory Council Annual Review 2019: Discussion (16 Oct 2019)
Michelle Mulherin: It is very important. We keep coming back to beef. My issue is not trade but the fact that the likes of soya beans are being grown in South America where rainforests are being torn down. A lot of such beans may be grown in tropical areas of developing countries where people are challenged with not having enough food to begin with but we are shipping them over here. Europe signed up to the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Climate Change Advisory Council Annual Review 2019: Discussion (16 Oct 2019)
Michelle Mulherin: My point is that soya beans and other plant-based protein are grown in certain areas but the land here is not suitable for doing that. Surely that has to be relevant.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (22 Oct 2019)
Michelle Mulherin: I was somewhat taken aback by the comments made by the Fianna Fáil party leader, Deputy Micheál Martin, while canvassing in County Clare recently, particularly those on Ireland West Airport Knock. He seemed to take issue with the manner in which the airport has been funded, suggesting that there should be further State intervention for Shannon Airport. The airports are very...
- Seanad: Wildlife (Amendment) Bill 2016: Report Stage (Resumed) (22 Oct 2019)
Michelle Mulherin: I second the amendment.
- Seanad: Wildlife (Amendment) Bill 2016: Report Stage (Resumed) (22 Oct 2019)
Michelle Mulherin: I support the amendment. Much of the debate or the mood music has been to the effect that we are somehow irresponsible or that we are enemies of the environment. This designation of land as national heritage areas is above and beyond what we are strictly required to do under birds and habitats directives, which give us SACs and so on. We are actually being responsible. We know there are...

- Seanad: Wildlife (Amendment) Bill 2016: Report Stage (Resumed) (22 Oct 2019)
Michelle Mulherin: Is the Senator saying that others do not?
- Seanad: Wildlife (Amendment) Bill 2016: Report Stage (Resumed) (22 Oct 2019)
Michelle Mulherin: The Senator will find that most people fit that bill. That is an insult to the rest of the people.
- Seanad: Wildlife (Amendment) Bill 2016: Report Stage (Resumed) (22 Oct 2019)
Michelle Mulherin: The Senator should go to Swinford and talk to people about environmental designation. I refer to the people who are actually living next to the environment, not those who live in some conclave or city, who do not have any bother with designation in rural Ireland. The Senator is way out of touch in what she is saying about the environment.
- Seanad: Wildlife (Amendment) Bill 2016: Report Stage (Resumed) (22 Oct 2019)
Michelle Mulherin: I am quite satisfied with what I had to say.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (23 Oct 2019)
Michelle Mulherin: I wish to voice my serious concern in response to the data published by the child and adolescent psychiatry surveillance system. This is a surveillance system used in child and adolescent mental health services in the UK and Ireland. Today, we are told that up to 4,000 children and adolescents in this country between the ages of eight to 17 may be suffering from anorexia nervosa. It is...
- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Implications for Ireland of the Withdrawal of the UK from the EU in regard to the Agriculture and Food Sectors: Discussion (23 Oct 2019)
Michelle Mulherin: Many of the issues have been addressed but I will make some comments. A recent analysis by the Central Bank indicates that farmers in the west and the midlands would be hardest hit by Brexit. These people are predominantly beef and sheep farmers. To what extent do the ICMSA and the IFA advocate for farmers on a geographical basis? The biggest fallout has been identified for these areas....

Michelle Mulherin: To what extent is Mr. McCormack concerned that we will see scenes similar to those we saw outside factory gates again if this task force is reconvened?
- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Implications for Ireland of the Withdrawal of the UK from the EU in regard to the Agriculture and Food Sectors: Discussion (23 Oct 2019)
Michelle Mulherin: Has the anger dissipated?
- Seanad Committee on the Withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union: Implications for Ireland of the Withdrawal of the UK from the EU in regard to the Agriculture and Food Sectors: Discussion (23 Oct 2019)
Michelle Mulherin: I am only going by the Central Bank analysis, just to clarify.
