Pat Deering: To add a separate issue, when the vote was taken in June 2016 one of the short-term difficulties was the sterling differential, which had a significant knock-on effect. Is it anticipated that it might be an issue again, come 1 April? I am not asking the witnesses to look into a crystal ball.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Implications of Brexit for Agriculture Sector: Discussion (13 Nov 2018)
Pat Deering: Mr. McKeever stated that when the vote was taken in June 2016, a number of companies in the mushroom sector, for example, were lost straight away and that there was a significant negative effect. The possibility of that happening again with another sector would be detrimental.

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Implications of Brexit for Agriculture Sector: Discussion (13 Nov 2018)
Pat Deering: I thank the witnesses for appearing before the committee today. This issue is evolving on an hourly basis and I am sure we will hear plenty about it in the coming weeks and months. We are all very conscious of the end result in terms of where it will go. Again, I thank the witnesses for appearing before the committee. Obviously, our paths will cross again as we progress through this.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Third Report of the Citizens' Assembly: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Nov 2018)
Pat Deering: I welcome the Secretaries General and their colleagues. I have a number of questions for each group. Mr. Moran mentioned the incentives already in place and stated there are enough incentives at present. There has to be behavioural change in the climate discussion and debate and for this to happen we must have more incentives. Has the Department looked at other incentives such as tax...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Third Report of the Citizens' Assembly: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Nov 2018)
Pat Deering: On that point, one of the recommendations of the Citizens' Assembly was that there should be a carbon tax on the agricultural sector, for example. Has there been any analysis done on the consequences and the potential consequences of that? I believe Mr. Watt is wrong on the 22% increase in livestock numbers in the past period of time. That figure is exaggerated. There has been an increase...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Third Report of the Citizens' Assembly: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Nov 2018)
Pat Deering: One of the recommendations of the Citizens' Assembly was that there should be a carbon tax on the agricultural sector. Has there been analysis done on the potential implications of that for the whole sector? We hear on a daily basis about rural Ireland. The agricultural sector, as Mr. Watt referenced earlier, is crucially important to the rural economy.

- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Heritage Council (15 Nov 2018)
Pat Deering: I thank the Minister for her response. I concur with her sentiments as regards our heritage and the importance of it. I also agree with the importance of local community involvement and the heritage officers having a key role to play in that regard. I suppose I speak from a parochial point of view. There are 27 heritage officers around the country. Unfortunately, Carlow does not have...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Heritage Council (15 Nov 2018)
Pat Deering: I thank the Minister for recognising the fact there are a number of key heritage sites in Carlow. The dolmen she mentioned is one of the biggest in Europe and the site needs to be developed even further. The Minister mentioned the idea of workshops throughout the country, which could be beneficial. In the event that there is no heritage officer in Carlow, is there a plan to have a...
