Seanad: Supplementary Budget Statement 2009: Statements (9 Apr 2009)

Terry Leyden: Mr. Sutherland said we are not the basket case we have been made out to be, that it is about time we started looking at the positives, and that we have been here before and we can do it again. I suggest to the House and to the Members of the Dáil that we all take a leaf from Mr. Sutherland's positive and constructive standpoint, especially as we face local and European elections, and inject...

Seanad: Supplementary Budget Statement 2009: Statements (9 Apr 2009)

Terry Leyden: I raised on the Order of Business and with the Minister for Finance and the Taoiseach at a meeting of the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party today the issue of the number of young people with fixed rate mortgages. There are mortgages and there are mortgages. However, the Government must step in when a young couple are or single person is effectively locked into a fixed rate mortgage when all...

Terry Leyden: Not just yet. I am waiting for something.

Seanad: Order of Business (23 Apr 2009)

Terry Leyden: Will the Leader arrange an early debate on the role of the Garda Síochána, developments in the force and the challenges it faces? It would be worthwhile to have the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Deputy Dermot Ahern, outline his legislative proposals in this regard and discuss related issues. Last Monday, the Irish Independent published an article by Michael Brennan, a...

Seanad: Order of Business (6 May 2009)

Terry Leyden: I very much welcome the decision by pension investment managers to invest a €7 billion fund in Government infrastructure. I ask the Leader to invite the Minister for Finance, Deputy Brian Lenihan, to the House to discuss this issue, which will give a great boost to the economy.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 May 2009)

Terry Leyden: This follows on proposals I put forward in this Chamber for a €10 billion international reconstruction fund which would be linked to pension schemes. There is money in the economy and people want to invest their money but they want security. This is a vehicle for achieving this. I welcome the fact that we will be investing our pension money in guaranteed schemes such as roads, schools,...

Terry Leyden: We have a stable political system-----

Seanad: Order of Business (6 May 2009)

Terry Leyden: -----and there is stability in inward investment. We have practically the best tax code in Europe as far as the Americans are concerned and we have attracted business and will continue to do so. We do not want more knockers. One knocker has gone from RTE to contest the election in Dublin South. It is a pity he did not have a health warning-----

Seanad: Order of Business (6 May 2009)

Terry Leyden: I am asking the Leader if he can invite the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources to come to this House to draw up protocols and procedures for those in senior positions in RTE whose salaries are paid for by taxpayers' money. I pay my licence fee, but I am not doing so for George Lee to contest the by-election in Dublin South.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 May 2009)

Terry Leyden: I want a health warning attached to those in RTE. He has undermined this Government over recent years.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 May 2009)

Terry Leyden: He is a Fine Gael man in a Fine Gael shirt inside his striped shirt. It is the most serious-----

Seanad: Order of Business (6 May 2009)

Terry Leyden: He is on €150,000. When I was elected to the House, I could not go back to my own practice afterwards. He can go back to RTE. That is the deal.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 May 2009)

Terry Leyden: It was biased reporting of the previous Government that damaged this economy and this State. I hope the public in Dublin South realise that.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 May 2009)

Terry Leyden: I appreciate that, but I am very angry about this, as the Cathaoirleach will understand.

Seanad: Order of Business (6 May 2009)

Terry Leyden: I do not like hypocrisy.

Seanad: Order of Business (13 May 2009)

Terry Leyden: I take this opportunity to wish Michael Phelan, senior usher, every success on his retirement tomorrow. He worked with distinction for 27 years in his House. I wish him well and thank him for his service to the State. I ask the Leader to invite to the House the Minister of State with responsibility for housing for a debate on the rights and obligations of landlords and tenants in the...

Seanad: Order of Business (13 May 2009)

Terry Leyden: -----it would be worthy of debate in the House.

Seanad: Order of Business (13 May 2009)

Terry Leyden: This House would be well utilised in having such debates.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (13 May 2009)

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (13 May 2009)
