- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)
Darren O'Rourke: We have identified another issue regarding bureaucracy. There is significant demand for bus drivers and lorry drivers in the Irish market. Can Mr. Waide see anything in that system that could increase efficiency and shorten the time to get those people fit and ready to work? I return to the point about the potential for duplication of assessments in having an initial superficial assessment...

Darren O'Rourke: I remember the RSA being before the committee previously. There was a request for an additional 40 testers. We saw progress but we seem to be going in the wrong direction. It is important and if a case needs to be made to the committee-----

Darren O'Rourke: I might add to that. This committee played a helpful role in giving the RSA the opportunity to articulate that need. The RSA came forward with a business case for additional capacity, which we supported. However, did it not adequately assess the level of demand? The RSA is now preparing a proposal to identify the types of permanent staff it will need in the years ahead. It is clear that...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Engagement with Road Safety Authority (12 Oct 2022)
Darren O'Rourke: How does that compare internationally? What is reasonable to expect in that space? Are we an outlier? It would be interesting to try to understand what is behind it. In the health service, for example, it can be people on different lists and there can be various reasons. It would be worth trying to see what is behind it.
- Select Committee on Communications, Climate Action and Environment: Estimates for Public Services 2022 (Supplementary)
Vote 29 - Environment, Climate and Communications (18 Oct 2022) Darren O'Rourke: I have several questions. On the radio yesterday and again today, the Minister mentioned that contracts will be concluded in a matter of days or shortly. He indicated a figure of €350 million initially. Is he confident that this will be enough to deliver on the projects? It was reported in the Business Postlast week or the week before that, with inflation costs, committed projects...

Vote 29 - Environment, Climate and Communications (18 Oct 2022) Darren O'Rourke: On a related point, we are reading that Tarbert's capacity is down and that it is unlikely to be back to its full capacity over the winter. A fire or some other incident knocked out capacity there. I presume this tightens an already tight situation.

Vote 29 - Environment, Climate and Communications (18 Oct 2022) Darren O'Rourke: I have a couple of questions. I refer to some of the language around the €200 and its relationship with VAT. To be clear, households can expect to see a reduction of a total of €200 three times. It will be one hundred and eighty-whatever euro plus VAT. It will be a total of €200. The last time around, there was a switch in relation to VAT in the middle of it and...
