Mortgage Interest Relief Scheme: Motion [Private Members] (8 Feb 2023)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I cannot speak as fast as my colleague. The Minister knows the Government cannot stand by. I listened to him from my office when he spoke about the interaction he has with the banks and the Central Bank and what is being done. The Government cannot stand by as people are being hit with increase after increase in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis. The Minister has received the same...

Select Committee on Education and Skills: Estimates for Public Services 2023
Vote 26 - Education (Revised)
(8 Feb 2023)

Rose Conway-Walsh: It is really concerning if the leaving certificate results are not going to be out until September again. As the Minister knows, this causes all kinds of problems, particularly for students trying to make choices and get accommodation. These are additional pressure students do not need to bear. I have spoken to many teachers who mark papers and asked them why they would not continue to do...

Rose Conway-Walsh: I am joking.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: The Economic and Social Benefits of the Belfast-Good Friday Agreement: IBEC (9 Feb 2023)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I thank the Chair and thank Mr. O'Brien, Ms Gallagher and Mr. D'Arcy for being here. We welcome the opportunity to discuss the report. I was delighted to be at the launch. It is really timely, significant and we can work with it here. I have gone through it several times and considered what it might mean for us. I thank IBEC for this progressive initiative. The importance of the report...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: The Economic and Social Benefits of the Belfast-Good Friday Agreement: IBEC (9 Feb 2023)

Rose Conway-Walsh: On that, it is an ongoing discussion here and we have expressions of interest. Does Mr. O'Brien think it is crucially important to have a veterinary school, wherever it is, that would cater for the needs of all the island, and not just those of this State? Then there would not need to be conversion courses and everything after that, because we get it right from the beginning.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: The Economic and Social Benefits of the Belfast-Good Friday Agreement: IBEC (9 Feb 2023)

Rose Conway-Walsh: Is it the case that we should all-island proof all our policies and actions? When it comes to setting up a veterinary school or whatever else, Departments and others need to be considering that on the basis of whether that suits our all-island policy.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: The Economic and Social Benefits of the Belfast-Good Friday Agreement: IBEC (9 Feb 2023)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I am interested in moving on to the question on the framework, just in terms of elaborating on-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: The Economic and Social Benefits of the Belfast-Good Friday Agreement: IBEC (9 Feb 2023)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I thank Mr. O’Brien.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: The Economic and Social Benefits of the Belfast-Good Friday Agreement: IBEC (9 Feb 2023)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I acknowledge IBEC funding the macroeconomic model, which will be a game changer. I also acknowledge the work being done by the ESRI. I cannot wait for the first lot of that work to come out because we will then be able to measure things properly and target things in a way that we have never done before. I appreciate the clarification because I did think that the work was being funded by...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: The Economic and Social Benefits of the Belfast-Good Friday Agreement: IBEC (9 Feb 2023)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I would like to make a proposal on the back of that, that when the first report of the macroeconomic model is published that the committee invites IBEC and the ESRI in for a joint session to discuss the results and findings of that. It would be very relevant.

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (14 Feb 2023)

Rose Conway-Walsh: 9. To ask the Taoiseach when the Cabinet committee on EU and international affairs will next meet. [6947/23]

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (14 Feb 2023)

Rose Conway-Walsh: Has the Taoiseach received clarity from the British Government regarding the concerning Nationality and Borders Act 2022 and the recently proposed roll-out of the electronic travel authorisation, ETA, scheme for third country nationals crossing the Border? I have grave concerns about this proposal. The Border is already too hard. We cannot have a situation where people travelling across...

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (14 Feb 2023)

Rose Conway-Walsh: 24. To ask the Taoiseach when the Housing for All progress report for quarter 4 2022 will be published. [6948/23]

Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (14 Feb 2023)

Rose Conway-Walsh: The Government finally moved on the issue of the rent tax credit and introduced a watered-down version of the Sinn Féin proposal. However, the requirement for the landlord to be registered with the Residential Tenancies Board, RTB, excludes so many, including students. Will the Taoiseach clarify whether RTB registration is a requirement? This punishes renters for landlords not...

Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Bill 2023: Second Stage (14 Feb 2023)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I welcome the opportunity to contribute on this important Bill. I thank all the County Mayo farmers, suppliers and those concerned with agriculture who contacted me with their valuable input into the Bill. It is long overdue legislation that has been a source of great anxiety due to the serious risks it could pose to the sector if we do not get it right. It should have been transposed by...

Rose Conway-Walsh: 53. To ask the Minister for Education and Skills to provide an update on the second stage of the assessment process for increased veterinary provision, including details on the selection criteria, expert panel and ensuring international standards; the number of additional veterinary places that will be delivered and whether this will meet the current needs of the sector; when the first places...

Rose Conway-Walsh: Can the Minister provide an update on the second stage of the assessment process for the increased veterinary provision, including details on the selection criteria, the expert panel, ensuring international standards, the number of additional veterinary places that will be delivered, whether this will meet the current needs of the sector and when the first places will be delivered?

Ceisteanna ar Sonraíodh Uain Dóibh - Priority Questions: Further and Higher Education (14 Feb 2023)

Rose Conway-Walsh: I thank the Minister. On to the figures, 302 qualified vets going on to the VCI register in 2022 shows a continuing rise year-on-year in the demand for vets. Some 70% of new vets entering the register were educated outside Ireland. That shows us the extent of the problem we have. We are agreed on that. We are deeply concerned that the panel lacks an independent expert on veterinary...
