- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Employment Strategy and Impact on Disabled Persons in the Workplace: Discussion (22 Feb 2023)
Paul Gavan: The general comment I will make, having heard directly from some of these workers, is that it is incredibly hurtful to be denied redundancy people are entitled to. Important companies doing important work like Rehab – and it does wonderful work – have to respect the decisions of the Labour Court. It is entirely unacceptable that a Labour Court decision has been sitting there...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Employment Strategy and Impact on Disabled Persons in the Workplace: Discussion (22 Feb 2023)
Paul Gavan: The reality is, in one worker’s case, instead of getting €60,000 he got €20,000. There is huge hurt over this issue. I will not pursue it further, Chair, but it will not go away. The Seanad will take a vote on the issue next week and I expect full support from every Member for calling on Rehab to accept the Labour Court recommendation and pay the workers what they are due.

- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (23 Feb 2023)
Paul Gavan: I commending what Senator Boyhan said regarding the mother and baby redress scheme. Anyone who heard our colleague, Samantha Long, on "The Late Debate" last night could not but be moved. I hope there is political will across the Chamber to make the necessary amendments to that Bill when it comes before this House.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (23 Feb 2023)
Paul Gavan: I also ask for a debate on the horrific murders in the West Bank yesterday. Among those killed by Israeli forces were a 72-year-old man, a 16-year-old boy and a 66-year-old man who died of tear gas inhalation. I will quote from the Al Jazeera report that detailed this yesterday, where Nida' Ibrahim stated: We are hearing stories that Israeli forces were shooting at the neighbours, people...
- Seanad: Rail Network: Statements (23 Feb 2023)
Paul Gavan: I welcome the Minister. It is good to hear such a positive conversation on rail across the Chamber. I am really curious to see what that strategic rail review looks like. It set out a number of really important goals in addition to contributing to decarbonisation, such as improving all-Ireland connectivity, enhancing regional rural accessibility, encouraging sustainable mobility and...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Employment Strategy and Impact on Disabled Persons in the Workplace: Discussion (22 Feb 2023)
Paul Gavan: I thank all the speakers and particularly acknowledge the powerful personal testimony of Padraig Hannafin. I welcome this discussion. I was struck by the comprehensive nature of the Rehab presentation. Ms McDonnell said: "It is now time to address this critical human rights issue and hold our heads high, along with our European counterparts.” I could not agree more with that point,...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Industrial Relations (28 Feb 2023)
Paul Gavan: It is good to see the Minister.I do not know how much contact he has had with these workers but when you speak to them and hear about the constraints on their lives because of the lack of a decent public service contract, you discover they have to sign on every summer and have to take out credit union loans to get through that summer because they only get the money for the dole by the time...
