- Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2023 - Children's Health Ireland
Financial Statements - National Treatment Purchase Fund (3 Jul 2025) Catherine Connolly: I was asking about private patients and the failure to collect the insurance, and the seriousness of that concept of having children as private patients. How many patients would be seen as private patients with an income coming in? It is relatively small, I think, because the figure is €14 million or something.
- Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2023 - Children's Health Ireland
Financial Statements - National Treatment Purchase Fund (3 Jul 2025) Catherine Connolly: How does that happen? The family have VHI cover or some other insurance and when someone is admitted to hospital, they are asked if they have insurance, which CHI is not entitled to ask.
- Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2023 - Children's Health Ireland
Financial Statements - National Treatment Purchase Fund (3 Jul 2025) Catherine Connolly: The question is put like that. What does that entitle them to above a child who does not have VHI or whatever other insurance? What is the advantage?
- Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2023 - Children's Health Ireland
Financial Statements - National Treatment Purchase Fund (3 Jul 2025) Catherine Connolly: Do they stay in a private stream then all of the time? No. Mr. Fitzpatrick might just explain to me the difference.

- Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2023 - Children's Health Ireland
Financial Statements - National Treatment Purchase Fund (3 Jul 2025) Catherine Connolly: I do not agree. A public hospital should be public. However, I am not here to express my views. I am just trying to clarify. The family have insurance and they are seen. The advantage to the hospital is that it is earning money and that is income, however small relative to its overall budget. What is the advantage for the child? Surely all children are treated the same.
- Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2023 - Children's Health Ireland
Financial Statements - National Treatment Purchase Fund (3 Jul 2025) Catherine Connolly: That says a lot. It is very good. Yet, we have an insurance system at the same time and they are being asked if they want to use it, even though there are no consequences and no benefits.
- Public Accounts Committee: Financial Statements 2023 - Children's Health Ireland
Financial Statements - National Treatment Purchase Fund (3 Jul 2025) Catherine Connolly: They are getting seen more quickly outside.
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Fishing Industry (9 Jul 2025)
Catherine Connolly: I am glad in a sense that the Minister of State is responding to this because he took a hands-on approach to another matter and he might have some influence here. I am standing here seven years after the Government introduced a wonderful policy. None of us had a problem with it. It was a policy to ensure the sustainability of fishing within the six-nautical mile zone by banning trawlers...
- Saincheisteanna Tráthúla - Topical Issue Debate: Fishing Industry (9 Jul 2025)
Catherine Connolly: I have no problem with missing Ministers of State. I understand how busy they are. Personal contact never impresses me although I am delighted when Ministers of State make personal contact. What impresses me more are answers on paper. Where are we with the analysis of the 5,500 consultations? I heard in the Minister of State's answer that "the policy context has changed since 2018" and...
- Transparency for Supermarket Profits: Motion [Private Members] (9 Jul 2025)
Catherine Connolly: The sound is more important than the vision, I think, on this occasion.
- Transparency for Supermarket Profits: Motion [Private Members] (9 Jul 2025)
Catherine Connolly: I call an Teachta David Cullinane. Two speakers are listed but there is just the Teachta here at the moment.
- Transparency for Supermarket Profits: Motion [Private Members] (9 Jul 2025)
Catherine Connolly: This motion is necessary, urgent and overdue and I thank the Social Democrats for bringing it forward. People are carrying the cost of a crisis they have nothing to do with. We can continuously talk about taking measures to deal with rising costs, and the Social Democrats outlined actions relating to it. Change the legislation and take action to bring about the necessary structural changes...
- Post-European Council: Statements (9 Jul 2025)
Catherine Connolly: I have two and a half minutes, so I will try to be as focused as I can. I absolutely agree with the comments on Frau von der Leyen. Europe lost its moral compass a long time ago. Frau von der Leyen is telling us that Israel is entitled to defend itself. It is just beyond. If the MEPs from Ireland vote against the motion of no confidence, we are seriously in trouble in Ireland. On the...
- Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (10 Jul 2025)
Catherine Connolly: I raise the Health Service Executive report from yesterday on the care of some women in Portiuncula hospital. The results are shocking enough that this could be replicated in other hospitals. Equally shocking and perhaps more is that we utterly failed to learn from the Walker report in 2018 and the same mistakes have been repeated. I am particularly aware of the national maternity...
