Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Carbon Sequestration and Storage in Agriculture: Discussion (17 Nov 2021)

Matt Carthy: That is an elegant diplomatic way of saying that the targets in this part of the climate action plan will not be met and certainly not by 2030.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Carbon Sequestration and Storage in Agriculture: Discussion (17 Nov 2021)

Matt Carthy: That would mean an even greater backlog of timber. Therefore, it will not happen without a big economic cost. That is the point I was trying to make. We had a good discussion on the role of peatlands in carbon emissions, particularly the peatlands that have been brought into agricultural use. Proportionately it might be a small amount of land, but in some parts of the country entire...

Matt Carthy: It should be more.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Carbon Sequestration and Storage in Agriculture: Discussion (17 Nov 2021)

Matt Carthy: That is good news in one way.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Carbon Sequestration and Storage in Agriculture: Discussion (17 Nov 2021)

Matt Carthy: I have one more question. Does the Chairman wish to come in on that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Carbon Sequestration and Storage in Agriculture: Discussion (17 Nov 2021)

Matt Carthy: I have a final question. I see different figures for our targets for organic production. Does Teagasc have a breakdown per hectare of the percentage reduction in emissions following the move to organic production in each of the sectors? Does it know the emissions saved if a beef farm moves to organic production? The same applies in dairy, tillage, etc.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Carbon Sequestration and Storage in Agriculture: Discussion (17 Nov 2021)

Matt Carthy: What is the current figure?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Carbon Sequestration and Storage in Agriculture: Discussion (17 Nov 2021)

Matt Carthy: Does Mr. Hagan wish to come in?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Carbon Sequestration and Storage in Agriculture: Discussion (17 Nov 2021)

Matt Carthy: In the context of the different measures farmers can take on an on-farm basis, are we at a point that with some reliability Devinish can assess the improvements in terms of storage over a period?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Carbon Sequestration and Storage in Agriculture: Discussion (17 Nov 2021)

Matt Carthy: I am coming to that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Carbon Sequestration and Storage in Agriculture: Discussion (17 Nov 2021)

Matt Carthy: I do not know if our guests heard our earlier discussion with the Department and Teagasc. I refer to what I am trying to determine in the first instance. Is it possible? Absolutely, it is possible. If you can do it on one farm, you can do it on all farms. Is it practically possible and feasible to do it at such a cost that it can be carried out throughout the country? That would be a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Carbon Sequestration and Storage in Agriculture: Discussion (17 Nov 2021)

Matt Carthy: What is our guests best guess at the cost of that? Can it be extrapolated to cost per hectare or per farm?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Carbon Sequestration and Storage in Agriculture: Discussion (17 Nov 2021)

Matt Carthy: What is the cost of that in the North?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Carbon Sequestration and Storage in Agriculture: Discussion (17 Nov 2021)

Matt Carthy: That is why I am trying to extrapolate the cost. Clearly, if we are to make the case to the Department, we need to know how much it will cost.
