Lisa Chambers: You are the Chair.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Conference on the Future of Europe and Other Matters: European Movement Ireland (28 Sep 2022)
Lisa Chambers: Top dog.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Conference on the Future of Europe and Other Matters: European Movement Ireland (28 Sep 2022)
Lisa Chambers: I will leave it to the Chair to ask about participation and who engaged with the different questions. These were strong statements from Ms O'Connell and EMI, particularly the statement that it would erode trust in the EU if we do not act on these recommendations from the Conference on the Future of Europe. Ms O'Connell said she has been busy recently, but she may be busier if she is...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs: Conference on the Future of Europe and Other Matters: European Movement Ireland (28 Sep 2022)
Lisa Chambers: It is quite interesting that we have now got a majority in favour of greater co-operation on defence, which is something we were afraid to talk about a number of years ago, but circumstances have changed. Are there any plans on the part of EMI to delve further into that space given it is quite controversial? What does greater co-operation in defence mean? What does it look like? We saw...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (4 Oct 2022)
Lisa Chambers: I concur with the Order of Business as outlined. Like other colleagues, a few minutes ago I participated in a photograph that was taken outside the gates of Leinster House to promote breast cancer awareness month. The campaign is very aptly entitled Care for Your Pair, which is a message for both men and women because men can also develop breast cancer.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (4 Oct 2022)
Lisa Chambers: There is a much lower incidence of breast cancer in men but it is important that we all become breast aware. The photograph was followed by an informative briefing in the audiovisual room, which was given by cancer nurses from the Irish Cancer Society who gave a practical demonstration on what to look out for in terms of changes in breast tissue, the obvious signs and when to seek help....
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (4 Oct 2022)
Lisa Chambers: I welcome that Ireland has finalised its new Common Agricultural Policy, CAP, strategic plan and that it has now been approved by Cabinet. I commend and congratulate the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Deputy McConalogue, and his other Cabinet colleagues on getting the plan over the line. The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine has described the plan as being...
- Seanad: Report of the Commission on the Defence Forces: Statements (4 Oct 2022)
Lisa Chambers: I thank the Acting Chairperson. I welcome the Minister, Deputy Coveney, to the Chamber. I welcome this high-level action plan to deal with the recommendations, some 69 main recommendations, from the Commission on the Defence Forces. I will hone in on a couple of key areas. I will give some personal views and insight into two of them. I welcome the acknowledgement that there is a gender...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Oct 2022)
Lisa Chambers: Mary, Fiona's mum, is most welcome to the Chamber. It is great to have her here. The Order of Business is No. 1, address to Seanad Éireann by Lord John McFall of Alcluith, Lord Speaker of the House of Lords, to be taken at 12.45 p.m. in accordance with the arrangements set out in the motion agreed by the House on Wednesday, 28 September 2022; No. 2, Judicial Appointments Commission...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Oct 2022)
Lisa Chambers: We are a little constrained on time because Lord McFall is coming in. Senator O'Loughlin spoke about her meeting with Jason Poole regarding his sister, who we know lost her life to domestic violence. The Senator reiterated the call for a domestic violence register of offenders that would be accessed by An Garda Síochána and possibly potential victims. It is the strong belief of...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Oct 2022)
Lisa Chambers: Obviously, the rule of law is paramount. The charge against him in terms of contempt of court was correct and he does need to come forward on that front, but I do take the Senator's point that it seems a very heavy-handed outcome in terms of the actual offence.Rather than getting into it, I would agree with the Senator that trial by Twitter is not the way we should be doing things....
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Oct 2022)
Lisa Chambers: Absolutely not.
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (5 Oct 2022)
Lisa Chambers: I, of course, agree with the comments of the courts.
- Seanad: Address to Seanad Éireann by the Rt. Hon. Lord John McFall, Lord Speaker of the House of Lords (5 Oct 2022)
Lisa Chambers: I welcome Lord McFall of Alcluith here for this address. I am speaking on behalf of the Fianna Fáil group in the Seanad. I had the pleasure of meeting him last night and again this morning with the Parliamentary Friendship Group. It was clear from our meetings, and from having read much about him in preparation for the visit, that he has a passion for both Northern Ireland and Ireland...
- Seanad: Passport Office: Motion (5 Oct 2022)
Lisa Chambers: I welcome this debate on the Passport Office.
- Seanad: Passport Office: Motion (5 Oct 2022)
Lisa Chambers: I am sharing time with Senator McGreehan. We had considerable issues with the Passport Office going back a number of months and I was one the Members in this Chamber saying that there were significant issues. I am pleased to see that there has been a huge turnaround. Someone very close to me put in an application online on a Friday and it arrived in the post on Monday, which is a...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (6 Oct 2022)
Lisa Chambers: Yesterday, at the Wild Atlantic Words festival hosted in Castlebar, I met a remarkable young woman who I went to school with, Geraldine Lavelle. Geraldine sustained a very serious injury in an accident a number of years ago and is now paralysed from the neck down. She was an active fitness person and she cycled and went to the gym regularly. She was a fantastic athlete as well as being a...
- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Oct 2022)
Lisa Chambers: I join with the Leader's comments in regard to Creeslough, Donegal. On behalf of the Fianna Fáil group I extend our deepest sympathies to the families, those who have lost loved ones and to the entire community. I strongly commend the fantastic work done by the emergency services who were on the scene dealing with what was an unthinkable tragedy. The scale of it is phenomenal. I also...
- Seanad: Situation in Iran: Motion (11 Oct 2022)
Lisa Chambers: I move: That Seanad Éireann: condemns: - the abuse of Mahsa Amini by the Iranian morality police and her death in custody; recognises that: - following Mahsa Amini’s abuse by the morality police and her death in custody, women and men across Iran have exercised their fundamental right to assemble and protest; - despite repeated calls for restraint, the response of the...
- Seanad: Situation in Iran: Motion (11 Oct 2022)
Lisa Chambers: I thank the Minister for that comprehensive and detailed reply. I thank all Members for contributing to the debate. Its quality was excellent. Senators are very informed on the issue. It is important that the Oireachtas debate these issues. We have spoken a lot this evening about the actions Ireland can take. Even having this debate to call out the human rights abuses for what they are...
