Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: New School of Veterinary Medicine: Discussion (10 May 2023)

Brian Leddin: I would not expect that at all and-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: New School of Veterinary Medicine: Discussion (10 May 2023)

Brian Leddin: I would not at all denigrate the points system. It has served the country well, notwithstanding the challenges with it. The witnesses might speak about the location. Does that come into the HEA's thinking as well?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: New School of Veterinary Medicine: Discussion (10 May 2023)

Brian Leddin: Going back to the entry piece, Dr. Wall said the HEA was not prescriptive at the outset about how any institution should propose entry. Will it take a view after it has heard from those applicants?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: New School of Veterinary Medicine: Discussion (10 May 2023)

Brian Leddin: It is very much a decision of the Minister or Government but is it expected imminently?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: New School of Veterinary Medicine: Discussion (10 May 2023)

Brian Leddin: Has the HEA given a shortlist to the Department?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: New School of Veterinary Medicine: Discussion (10 May 2023)

Brian Leddin: I thank Dr. Wall.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: New School of Veterinary Medicine: Discussion (10 May 2023)

Brian Leddin: I thank the Chair. I will be very brief. Mr. Moynes’s opening statement was peppered with cautious language. I may have to go to a vote but perhaps he could answer on the record, if the meeting continues while we are away, about the sense of urgency in the Department on delivering this project. The opening statement referred to an entry for 2024-5 or 2025-6, but I do not get the...

Written Answers — Department of Finance: Tax Code (9 May 2023)

Brian Leddin: 112. To ask the Minister for Finance if there are plans to introduce weight- and size-based taxes on private vehicles in Ireland to incentivise a switch to smaller and lighter vehicles in an effort to ensure Ireland's vehicle fleet is as efficient as possible; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21506/23]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Sectoral Emissions Ceiling: Discussion (26 Apr 2023)

Brian Leddin: I welcome Ms Donnelly. It is good to see her again. Deputy O'Rourke did not mention it but he and I were in Amsterdam and Utrecht in the Netherlands at the weekend. We were on a tour with the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action to look at cycling infrastructure but also to discuss green hydrogen and the circular economy with stakeholders there. It is a parallel...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Sectoral Emissions Ceiling: Discussion (26 Apr 2023)

Brian Leddin: I am sorry about that.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Sectoral Emissions Ceiling: Discussion (26 Apr 2023)

Brian Leddin: The weight of SUVs

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Sectoral Emissions Ceiling: Discussion (26 Apr 2023)

Brian Leddin: I think I lost a bit of time because of that audio issue. I would like to ask one final question of Ms Donnelly. While we have EV policies, we do not yet have policies on scrappage of fossil fuel vehicles. If we are simply adding EVs to the existing number of vehicles, we will not get a reduction in emissions.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Sectoral Emissions Ceiling: Discussion (26 Apr 2023)

Brian Leddin: I gave up my car a number of years ago and I do not drive any more. I use GoCar and I find it very useful. On the no-claims bonus, people will have two years' grace with the insurance companies. I suggest that people give this a go, maybe park the car up for a few weeks or months and see how they can get about without it. They may find that it is easier than they think.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Transport Sectoral Emissions Ceiling: Discussion (26 Apr 2023)

Brian Leddin: If I heard Ms Donnelly correctly on the tax approach for heavier vehicles, including electric vehicles, she would favour a regime that reflected the true energy efficiency. That would incentivise lighter and smaller vehicles, which would be welcome. To return to the scrappage issue, I was not so much getting at the physical challenge of scrapping a lot of fossil fuel vehicles. Rather, it...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Renewable Energy and Port Capacity: Discussion (16 May 2023)

Brian Leddin: I will kick off the questions. Unlike the other speakers, Mr. Murphy did not mention rail as being important. Is rail part of the plan for the Port of Cork?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Renewable Energy and Port Capacity: Discussion (16 May 2023)

Brian Leddin: I thank Mr. Murphy. I want to give all the witnesses an opportunity to outline succinctly what they need from the Oireachtas. Mr. Keating's statement is quite clear in this regard but I am interested in the timelines he would like to see for the delivery by the Government of the various aspects.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Renewable Energy and Port Capacity: Discussion (16 May 2023)

Brian Leddin: I have limited time. Could Mr. Keating comment on the funding point that he touched on?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Renewable Energy and Port Capacity: Discussion (16 May 2023)

Brian Leddin: I take it from that that public-private opportunities would be explored.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Renewable Energy and Port Capacity: Discussion (16 May 2023)

Brian Leddin: I want to be fair to members. Most of my time is gone but do any other guests wish to make a quick point?
