Pathway to Redress for Victims of Convicted Child Sexual Abusers: Motion [Private Members] (4 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: I thank Deputy O'Dea and Fianna Fáil for using their Private Members' time for this motion. Raising this issue is a very good use of Private Members' time. I thank all the Deputies who played a role in raising these cases down the years. I hope that when this motion is passed tomorrow, the Government will recognise the democratic wish of the Dáil and implement the motion....

[29495/18]

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Employment Equality Act Order: Minister for Education and Skills (5 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: This is a classic case of "if I were you, I would not start from here" because, although I am against discrimination on the basis of religion, to which this measure amounts, I support minority rights. The requirement for religious discrimination in order to protect minority rights arises from our sectarian school system. Does the Minister agree that this points to the need for a wholesale...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Employment Equality Act Order: Minister for Education and Skills (5 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: Does the Minister agree that we will not be able to guarantee the provision of objective sex education to students unless we deal with the religious ethos exemption in education?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Employment Equality Act Order: Minister for Education and Skills (5 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: I hope the Minister takes my point on board.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Review of Relationships and Sexuality Education: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: Would it surprise Mr. Curtis and Dr. Gormley to learn that in a survey of school students conducted by the Irish Second–Level Students Union students were asked to rate their experience of relationships and sexuality education on a scale of one to five, with one being terrible and five being excellent, and that approximately 45% rated it at one, with 25% or so rating it at two or...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Review of Relationships and Sexuality Education: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: I would like an answer to the question on the quotes from Familiaris Consortio. Does he believe that the ethos as set out there should inform the teaching of RSE today?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Review of Relationships and Sexuality Education: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: Can I get an answer on Familiaris Consortio?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Review of Relationships and Sexuality Education: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: I think this gets to the point. Dr. Gormley can say the content as delivered is the same but then he says different materials and different methods are used, which gives rise to the question of whether what the student is taught in the classroom is any different. It would seem to me that it is likely that it is. It is a Jesuitical distinction between the content and the method of delivery....

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Review of Relationships and Sexuality Education: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: That is an ETB school, I presume with a co-trustee.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Review of Relationships and Sexuality Education: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: In some of those schools there is also Accord, which is a Roman Catholic agency, which is brought in and paid with public money to give RSE. There is no question that the students who receive RSE from Accord get different RSE than they would receive from a different body.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Review of Relationships and Sexuality Education: Discussion (Resumed) (5 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: I am going to return to Familiaris Consortio. In his opening statement, Mr. Curtis said that the position of the Catholic schools on sex education was outlined in this document. Does he agree that RSE in Catholic schools should be taught in the context of that document's statement that "in this context, education for chastity is absolutely essential"? Does he agree that this should inform...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Tax Avoidance (11 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: 64. To ask the Minister for Finance his views on a recent study (details supplied) which has concluded that Ireland is the world's largest tax haven; the measures he will take to close tax loopholes and stop aggressive tax planning in view of the fact this is one of many studies with similar findings; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [31054/18]

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Tax Avoidance (11 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: I ask the Minister to recognise the writing on the wall and to accept the reality that Ireland is a major corporate conduit tax haven. I ask him to accept the points made in the paper, "The Missing Profits of Nations", which outlines that Ireland had the greatest amount of corporate profits shifted through it in the world - some $106 billion in 2015, which was more than all the countries of...

Ceisteanna - Questions - Priority Questions: Tax Avoidance (11 Jul 2018)

Paul Murphy: Diarmaid Ferriter put it well in The Irish Timeswhen he said that if the Department of Finance were to be believed, there must be an awful lot of eejits slaving away on academic research projects relating to tax. The approach of the Department and the Government is simply to deny report after report based on facts which illustrate Ireland's role as a corporate tax haven. Let us deal with...
