- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Non-court-based Conflict Resolution Mechanisms for Media-related Complaints: Discussion (17 Jan 2024)
Shane Cassells: I thank the Cathaoirleach and I welcome all of the witnesses. For the record, I state that I am still a member of the NUJ. I disagree with Senator Warfield in his statement that this hearing is politicised. We have been discussing the future of the media now for the past four years on this particular committee. In my mind, this is a key component of that. I disagree inherently with the...

Shane Cassells: When Mr. O'Connell is speaking to his fellow members, what would the likes of The Connacht Tribuneand the Meath Chroniclebe putting aside on their books to account for this and factor it in for the year ahead?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Non-court-based Conflict Resolution Mechanisms for Media-related Complaints: Discussion (17 Jan 2024)

- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Non-court-based Conflict Resolution Mechanisms for Media-related Complaints: Discussion (17 Jan 2024)

Shane Cassells: Can I quickly ask Mr. Purcell from the radio sector a similar type of question?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Non-court-based Conflict Resolution Mechanisms for Media-related Complaints: Discussion (17 Jan 2024)

- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Non-court-based Conflict Resolution Mechanisms for Media-related Complaints: Discussion (17 Jan 2024)
Shane Cassells: Can I talk to Mr. McConnell from a national point of view? In his opening statement, he said that the civil jury decisions are "erratic". What does he mean by that because the question of whether there should be juries is a big one in the general scheme of the Bill? This has been deemed by some, including retired justices, as being inherently undemocratic.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Non-court-based Conflict Resolution Mechanisms for Media-related Complaints: Discussion (17 Jan 2024)
Shane Cassells: Similar to what I asked Mr. O'Connell, what does Mr. McConnell find from his members at a national level regarding the quantity of cases taken against the national papers?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Non-court-based Conflict Resolution Mechanisms for Media-related Complaints: Discussion (17 Jan 2024)
Shane Cassells: On the issue of resources, there is no doubt the volume of journalists working in newsrooms today vis-à-vis20 years ago is lower. That puts pressure on reporters to get things right, which everyone strives to do in a newsroom but the reality is that is becoming more challenging because the resources Mr. McConnell, for example, has at his disposal as a national editor are fewer than...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Non-court-based Conflict Resolution Mechanisms for Media-related Complaints: Discussion (17 Jan 2024)
Shane Cassells: The NUJ represents the workforce and reporters who strive to get things right. Balance that against the people who own these media organs. When I started as an intern 30 years ago at the Meath Chronicle when I was in college, there was a full-time copy-reader - in a provincial newspaper, in a newsroom. Now, you are lucky to get journalists to staff what is required, certainly at provincial...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Non-court-based Conflict Resolution Mechanisms for Media-related Complaints: Discussion (17 Jan 2024)
Shane Cassells: I wish to ask Mr. McConnell and our local representatives about how pronounced that is. Can he provide a real-life example of the impact that is having on Irish journalism, which leads into Irish democracy?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Non-court-based Conflict Resolution Mechanisms for Media-related Complaints: Discussion (17 Jan 2024)
Shane Cassells: The legal resources available to local newspapers and radio are not the same as those available to national organisations. That has an impact as well. On top of that, it is clear the resources available at a local level, covering courts in particular, are diminishing. That has a serious impact on Irish democracy. Will Mr. O'Connell comment?
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Non-court-based Conflict Resolution Mechanisms for Media-related Complaints: Discussion (17 Jan 2024)
Shane Cassells: I have the same question for Mr. Purcell.
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Non-court-based Conflict Resolution Mechanisms for Media-related Complaints: Discussion (17 Jan 2024)
Shane Cassells: We heard in the presentation in the AV room that the journalists coming out of DCU or DIT or wherever are now working for PR companies or, worse, politicians. What is the situation regarding the quality of young journalists coming into newsrooms and the ability to cover them?
- Seanad: Policing, Security and Community Safety Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) and Remaining Stages (24 Jan 2024)
Shane Cassells: As echoed by Senator Fitzpatrick, however, you have that in every county. Those policing committees are currently made up of a range of local community representatives. Senator Ruane is right in respect of those leadership figures who are not just elected representatives. They are some of the best attendees and strongest voices at these meetings. I know from the policing committee...
- Seanad: Policing, Security and Community Safety Bill 2023: Committee Stage (Resumed) and Remaining Stages (24 Jan 2024)
Shane Cassells: I thank the Minister for her extensive response and for clarifying how we got to the final positions, as well as the flexibility that will be afforded by the regulations, the composition, the rationale in respect of the various amendments and her clarification regarding the position in respect of the chairs and the membership. That is important in the context of this debate. As has been...
- Seanad: Death of Former Taoiseach: Expressions of Sympathy (7 Feb 2024)
Shane Cassells: The first newspaper to hit the newsstands with the coverage of John Bruton's passing was quite fittingly his own local newspaper the Meath Chronicle, which hit the shelves in Meath at 6 p.m. last night and carried a front-page picture of the former Taoiseach and Meath man with the headline "Death of a Statesman". John Bruton was every bit a statesman who rose to the highest office in this...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Feb 2024)
Shane Cassells: I again welcome all the witnesses. I thank Mr. Bakhurst and Ms Ní Raghallaigh for their statements, the contrition offered in those statements here today as well, and for what they are saying in terms of going forward. Their words are a bit like the White Star Line apologising for the sinking of the Titanic, because neither of them were at the helm when the musical fiasco hit the...
- Joint Committee on Tourism, Culture, Arts, Sport And Media: Transparency of RTÉ Expenditure of Public Funds and Governance Issues: Discussion (Resumed) (14 Feb 2024)
Shane Cassells: There was a series of questions. Mr. Lynch and Mr. Coveney were here as witnesses and there was a series of questions in respect of Toy Show The Musical. It was already quite evident that it was going to be a financial disaster. As an executive board member, why did Mr. Lynch not interject and offer his thoughts in respect of that?
