- Seanad: Judicial Appointments Commission Bill 2017: Committee Stage (Resumed) (10 Jul 2019)
Gerard Craughwell: I know we are not but we have just hit the last amendment. The Minister has shown a willingness to engage for such a long period of time, and for the most part, with good humour. We need to acknowledge that and I hope he goes away a happy man for the summer.
- Seanad: Local Government Rates and Other Matters Bill 2018: Committee and Remaining Stages (10 Jul 2019)
Gerard Craughwell: I support the amendment but I understand the Minister of State's need to get this Bill through the House. Will he give some indication that, once the Bill has passed, he will introduce a statutory instrument or use some other method to reflect the spirit of the amendment? I fully understand how a massive hike in rates may put small companies over the cliff edge. Last night, we heard of a...
- Seanad: Local Government Rates and Other Matters Bill 2018: Committee and Remaining Stages (10 Jul 2019)
Gerard Craughwell: -----its rates shoot through the roof because the forecourt had been upgraded. The Bill needs to pass and an undertaking to act afterwards would satisfy me this evening. I will bat that one over to the Minister of State.
- Seanad: Local Government Rates and Other Matters Bill 2018: Committee and Remaining Stages (10 Jul 2019)
Gerard Craughwell: I wish to make a quick point. The Minister of State is on the ball regarding online taxes. He should remember that there are many jobs in delivering products for stores such as Tesco and the like, so he should not be too quick to start throwing taxes onto online shopping.
- Seanad: Local Government Rates and Other Matters Bill 2018: Committee and Remaining Stages (10 Jul 2019)
Gerard Craughwell: I support Senator Ruane, who made an excellent case for charitable status for these organisations. I can see that will present a problem for the Minister of State. I would not like the House to divide on the matter but rather find another way around the problem. I look forward to the reply of the Minister of State.

- Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (11 Jul 2019)
Gerard Craughwell: I join with colleagues in expressing my sympathy to the families of Brendan Grace and Noel Whelan. Noel Whelan contacted me and asked to meet me two days after I was elected to this House in 2014. He met me downtown and spent two hours with me, advising me and expressing his wishes and desires for how the Seanad would develop over the coming years. I thought it was a most generous act. I...
- Seanad: Parole Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (11 Jul 2019)
Gerard Craughwell: I support my colleague, Senator Marie-Louise O'Donnell, on this issue. One cannot doubt her commitment to ensuring a proper system for sentencing is put in place with regard to the issues that are of concern to her and those she represents through her association with AdVIC. I will support the Senator's amendment in a vote.
- Seanad: Parole Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (11 Jul 2019)
Gerard Craughwell: I will not take much of the Minister's time in what I have to say. One of the great things about being in the Seanad is that we can sit and listen to debate and different sides of the argument. Senator Marie-Louise O'Donnell's passion and conviction in this area is beyond question, as is her commitment to Advic. Those who have suffered at the hands of the cold-blooded murderers we are...
- Seanad: Parole Bill 2016: Committee and Remaining Stages (11 Jul 2019)
Gerard Craughwell: I cannot begin to imagine what his poor mother and father must feel. At the time of the Moors murders I was living in England and there was the way they played with the families. At least they were locked up and kept there until they expired. What Senator Marie-Louise O'Donnell is trying to do is allow judges to state this guy or woman should not go before a parole board for X number of...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Heritage Sites (24 Sep 2019)
Gerard Craughwell: I welcome the Minister of State, Deputy Moran, to the refurbished House and I thank him for loosening the purse strings to do a wonderful job on the historic Leinster House. The Office of Public Works is to be congratulated on a marvellous piece of work. Alas, that is not why we are here today. We are here at the request of Councillor Paddy McQuillan in regard to St. Laurence's Gate in...
- Seanad: Nithe i dtosach suíonna - Commencement Matters: Heritage Sites (24 Sep 2019)
Gerard Craughwell: I understand the limitations placed on the Department and that the Minister of State has calls from all corners of the country for various projects relating to monuments. The important aspect here is that there is a possibility of payback by having it open as a tourist attraction in Drogheda. When he returns to his Department the Minister of State might discuss with his officials how we...
