Eamon Gilmore: I join with the Taoiseach and Deputy Kenny in conveying to Senator Ted Kennedy the good wishes of the Labour Party in his battle to overcome his current illness. In his meetings with President Bush, did the former Taoiseach raise the...
- Official Engagements. (28 May 2008)
Eamon Gilmore: As the Taoiseach stated, the Government relies on and accepts the diplomatic assurances it receives from the United States in respect of extraordinary rendition at Shannon. As the Taoiseach is aware, this is a position that was criticised not only by the Labour Party but also by bodies such as Amnesty International. What surprises me about the Taoiseach's response is, given that the...

Eamon Gilmore: On 9 January last, the Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government established a committee to review the electoral boundaries for local elections. He gave that committee the requirement that it had to report before 20 June. Under the terms of reference he gave to the committee, it is quite clear there will be quite significant changes in electoral boundaries for the local...
- Order of Business. (28 May 2008)
Eamon Gilmore: That is the problem. The problem has been that in the past, local election boundaries have been kept under wraps until the very last moment. A committee has been established to deal with this. It is a new procedure under the Local Government Act 2001. I am asking for an assurance that when the report is received by the Minister, it will be published and made available straightaway. There...
- Order of Business. (28 May 2008)
Eamon Gilmore: As I understand it, this is procedure which is relatively new. I think it comes under the Local Government Act 2001. I do not think we have been around this track before. I understand that it is the first review of local government boundaries since 1998 so there is no normal way. This is not something that comes up every year but is a one-off report that looks at the populations involved....

Eamon Gilmore: I wish to raise two matters. The first relates to the promised legislation on agency workers and refers to the Bill published by the Labour Party on this matter. The terms of this agreement appear to...

Eamon Gilmore: The second matter is the report of the Morris tribunal. Previously, I asked for a debate in the House on this report. We were told the Government wanted to await the publication of the two further reports from the tribunal which the Tánaiste stated were imminent when I asked her on 8 May and which I now understand will be published in the middle of June. I am concerned that the debate in...
