- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: The House should note that we had a good debate here last night on green energy. I ask the Leader to explain to the House why, having allocated time for such an important issue, the main Government party, Fianna Fáil, only put forward one speaker. This is embarrassing for the House. I was left wondering why the full amount of time was not used to discuss such an important issue. The...
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: I want to go firmly on the record on this issue. Yesterday the Leader raised the issue of energy costs. He made a fair point and this is an issue that should be considered. The Joint Committee on Communications, Energy and Natural Resources provided an opportunity to discuss this and what we discovered is that the real issue is with the wholesalers, such as Whitegate oil refinery, which...

Joe O'Toole: I reiterate the point made yesterday on the lack of legislation in the House this week. If that is to continue, we should be allowed additional Private Members' time.
- Seanad: Order of Business (12 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: We can certainly raise issues for debate in the House. The acting leader of the Opposition stated we could be discussing today positive proposals on the legislative changes required to deal with the Limerick issue and others. We can certainly do that. If business is so light in the Seanad with no legislation coming through, we should look to this side of the House for matters for...

- Seanad: Irish Agriculture: Motion (12 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: Go raibh mÃle maith agat a Aire as an méid sin ach caithfidh mé a rá nach raibh morán ann chun dóchas a thabhairt d'fheirmeoirà na tÃre i ndáirÃre. Tá cúpla rud sa mhéid a dúirt an tAire atá tábhachtach agus tiocfaidh mé ar ais chucu go luath. I begin by congratulating Senators Bradford and John Paul Phelan on tabling this excellent and timely motion. I feel sorry for my...
- Seanad: Irish Agriculture: Motion (12 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: I support this motion. I urge my friends on the Government side of the House to think again before voting against a superb vindication of Irish agriculture and farmers and the support to which they are entitled. We should stand with them and invest in agriculture rather than cutting back.
- Seanad: Irish Agriculture: Motion (12 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: The Minister of State's speech had even less to do with this debate. We learned that one a long time ago.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: I concur with much of what Senator Fitzgerald has just said. On the Order of Business yesterday, I referred to the lack of business in the House at present. This was raised by my colleagues and by Senator Fitzgerald on the preceding day. Let us be absolutely clear that I believe the Government is winding down the importance of this House.
- Seanad: Order of Business (13 Nov 2008)
Joe O'Toole: It is trying to reduce to a minimum the impact of debate in the House and to undermine us in what we are doing. A classic issue arose yesterday. When we mentioned the lack of legislation in the House, we received a response from the Government side on the important issues that were being debated. That was not the issue at all and we should therefore park that idea. Everybody on this side...
