Seanad: Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2004: Committee and Remaining Stages. (24 Mar 2004)

Maurice Cummins: I listened with interest to the Minister. She spoke at length but spent very little time on the amendment which calls for a reversal of the cuts. I am delighted she met the National Association of Widows in Ireland and that it was an amicable meeting but if the Minister is saying that she will examine the base line payments for widows aged under 66 years, it will be in terms of next year's...

Seanad: Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2004: Committee and Remaining Stages. (24 Mar 2004)

Maurice Cummins: There is no respite at all from the cutbacks if the Minister is trying to take the sting out of this issue by talking about the situation in 12 months time. We will not allow that to happen.

Seanad: Social Welfare (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2004: Committee and Remaining Stages. (24 Mar 2004)

Maurice Cummins: We believe this should be amended now. The Minister stated yesterday that the social insurance fund is €1.6 billion in surplus. Surely the measly amount of money that is required can be taken from the social insurance fund to pay the widows? It was raided previously for election purposes and it could be done at this stage to help widows. We intend to press the amendment.

Seanad: High Level of Alcohol Consumption by Young People: Statements. (1 Apr 2004)

Maurice Cummins: I thank Senator Norris for sharing time. I spoke on this issue in 2002 but have a few other points I would like to raise. There is no question but that the drink culture requires urgent attention. Urgent social change is required which will need tough decisions to tackle major vested interests. A public information plan is also required to deal with the health and educational aspects of...

Seanad: Order of Business. (6 Apr 2004)

Maurice Cummins: I join colleagues in requesting the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform to come to the House to explain how and when he intends to honour his commitment in the programme for Government to provide 2,000 extra gardaí. As stated at the AGSI conference yesterday, front-line policing is at its lowest level for 20 years. That is an indictment of the Government. Are the extra gardaí to...

Seanad: Draft Guidelines on Rural Housing: Statements (Resumed). (6 Apr 2004)

Maurice Cummins: I welcome the Minister. There is no doubt that there is a need to rejuvenate our rural areas and villages throughout the country. The reasons, as outlined by other speakers, are so sports teams can be maintained, schools can be kept open and parishes can be kept alive. We are all in agreement about this. However, will the guidelines announced by the Minister make a blind bit of difference?...
