Committee on Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science: Engagement with Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science (11 Jun 2025)

Maeve O'Connell: I thank the Minister for coming in today, and I very much welcome his opening statement and focus on the four priorities. The statement provides us with great clarity, along with his Department. There are matters I want to raise, the first of which, as many people have raised, is student accommodation. Just to personalise the situation a bit, I certainly have known students who have had...

Committee on Defence and National Security: General Scheme of the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2025 : Discussion (Resumed) (19 Jun 2025)

Maeve O'Connell: I apologise for arriving late. I enjoyed reading both the witnesses’ opening statements. I absolutely recognise their expertise and competence in this area. There was great clarity of thought and language in both statements to help us understand the issues we are facing here. I wish to get a bit more clarity around some of the comments Mr. Power made. He said we are seen as an...

Committee on Defence and National Security: General Scheme of the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2025 : Discussion (Resumed) (19 Jun 2025)

Maeve O'Connell: Can Mr. Power give us any examples of that? I love the cat’s paw expression.

Committee on Defence and National Security: General Scheme of the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2025 : Discussion (Resumed) (19 Jun 2025)

Maeve O'Connell: Examples where that has occurred.

Committee on Defence and National Security: Recent Air Corps Developments: Discussion (24 Jun 2025)

Maeve O'Connell: I thank the witnesses for coming here this evening and making themselves available to answer all these questions. It has certainly been very enlightening for me with respect to all the procedures and the many questions we have had over the past number of weeks. Coming back to the shortfall in air traffic controllers, I know my colleague Senator Kyne raised this as well. It was mentioned...

Committee on Defence and National Security: Recent Air Corps Developments: Discussion (24 Jun 2025)

Maeve O'Connell: Coming to the training that was mentioned, what is the minimum requirement for people to train to become an air traffic controller? It is a very stressful job. How long does it take to qualify? The different ratings and certifications were mentioned earlier. I assume this applies to every airfield, different zones and so on. How often would they have to be updated and maintained? I am...

Committee on Defence and National Security: Recent Air Corps Developments: Discussion (24 Jun 2025)

Maeve O'Connell: In a more general question, I would have thought that working out of Dublin Weston Airport or Casement Aerodrome - maybe I made an assumption - would be a little less stressful than working out of Dublin Airport given the volumes, or maybe even in Shannon Airport, where you are trying to co-ordinate everything coming across the Atlantic.

Committee on Defence and National Security: Recent Air Corps Developments: Discussion (24 Jun 2025)

Maeve O'Connell: I have a final question if we have enough time. As we do not have a fully manned ATC in Baldonnel all the time at the moment, who ensures that airspace is not breached?

Committee on Defence and National Security: General Scheme of the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2025 : Discussion (Resumed) (26 Jun 2025)

Maeve O'Connell: I thank Professor Tonra, Mr. Noonan and Mr. Murphy for joining us and for the clarity of their presentations and interpretations of the issues. It has been very helpful for us all. I might come back to a contribution made by Mr. Noonan. He said that if we make this change and remove the requirement for the Security Council to give approval before we deploy, we will not know our direction...

Committee on Defence and National Security: General Scheme of the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2025 : Discussion (Resumed) (26 Jun 2025)

Maeve O'Connell: Potentially, we will not be involved in peacekeeping activities in future.

Committee on Defence and National Security: General Scheme of the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2025 : Discussion (Resumed) (26 Jun 2025)

Maeve O'Connell: There has been much talk from members and the witnesses about the importance of trust. I understand from Mr. Murphy's contribution that it really is the Dáil, the Oireachtas and the Government that are ultimately the protector of our neutrality as opposed to the UN Security Council, from his outlining of the history in that regard. If that is the case, the people we are trusting...

Committee on Defence and National Security: General Scheme of the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2025 : Discussion (Resumed) (26 Jun 2025)

Maeve O'Connell: I am sorry to interrupt Mr. Noonan. I am just watching the clock and I would like to hear a response from Mr. Murphy.

Committee on Defence and National Security: General Scheme of the Defence (Amendment) Bill 2025 : Discussion (Resumed) (26 Jun 2025)

Maeve O'Connell: Does Mr. Murphy trust the people to elect the right parliamentarians and the parliamentarians then to withstand?
