Seanad: Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2008: Committee Stage (19 Nov 2008)

Dominic Hannigan: From recollection, the Minister of State was rudely interrupted and had not finished what he was going to state, although I declared I intended to withdraw the amendment which might help to expedite his response.

Seanad: Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2008: Committee Stage (19 Nov 2008)

Dominic Hannigan: I thank the Minister of State for his reply. As one who spent some time on local authorities I feel this is necessary. Otherwise, I would be concerned that in some instances the managers will not respond and will not tell the various organisations why they failed to take account of their proposals. I cannot let this rest.

Seanad: Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2008: Committee Stage (19 Nov 2008)

Dominic Hannigan: This is the second time this has happened in two weeks. There might be a problem with the system.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2008)

Dominic Hannigan: With all the recessionary talk, it is great to have sport to raise one's spirits. Earlier this week we watched the match in Limerick which helped raise spirits there. Last night, I had the pleasure of attending Croke Park to watch the Ireland v Poland game. I was in the Polish crowd and was a little confused at the start. Given that it was Croke Park, all the red and white flags would...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 Nov 2008)

Dominic Hannigan: I doubt one could get a better example of how Ireland has changed. I congratulate the GAA for opening Croke Park to other organisations. However, the Leader should impress on the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism the need to ensure that the GPA is properly looked after. There were rumours from his office yesterday that the Minister might be trying to renege on his previous commitments...

Seanad: Cluster Munitions and Anti-Personnel Mines Bill 2008: Second Stage (25 Nov 2008)

Dominic Hannigan: I welcome the Minister of State to the House. Like Senator Boyle and others, I support the swift passage of the Bill through both Houses. I commend the efforts of Deputies and Senators on their efforts to ensure the Bill passes as expeditiously as possible. This is important legislation because it ensures that Ireland plays a large part in the global effort to eradicate the use of cluster...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Dec 2008)

Dominic Hannigan: Like other Senators, I was very concerned on reading the Sunday newspapers about the potential deficit in private pension funds. The figure referred to of €30 billion dwarves those for the banks. On Sunday I was at a Christmas party for 150 elderly people in Kells. The sense of concern was evident. Many there were concerned as to what this means to their potential income. As people get...

Seanad: Order of Business (2 Dec 2008)

Dominic Hannigan: I was very worried to learn from last night's programme that people were driving such journey lengths on our national roads. There is a clear need for the Garda and the enforcement agencies to take action in this regard. We should not be looking at trucks running into cars at this time of the year. There are real concerns about road safety that need to be tackled.

Seanad: Order of Business (3 Dec 2008)

Dominic Hannigan: This morning in Oslo Ireland signed the convention banning cluster bombs. I welcome that and congratulate the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Deputy Dermot Ahern, the Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Deputy Peter Power and Deputies and Senators from all sides of the House on their dedication and commitment to ensuring this has, finally, taken place.
