Order of Business. (20 Jun 2006)

Pat Rabbitte: It arises in the PDs I hear. For almost two months I have raised the matter of the Dalton report. Everyone, including the media, has received this report except Members of this House. I keep being told by the Taoiseach and the Tánaiste that it will be out soon. Whatever is going on, two months later one cannot get a look at the report.

Leaders' Questions. (21 Jun 2006)

Pat Rabbitte: The Taoiseach will recall that one of the main factors giving rise to punitive taxation over a generation was the massive, widespread and endemic scale of tax evasion. He will recall that the Minister for Finance of the day used to claim there was no pot of gold out there and it took various tribunals and good journalism to highlight that this was a society in which tax evasion was normal and...

Leaders' Questions. (21 Jun 2006)

Pat Rabbitte: I agree with the Taoiseach that nobody in this House is against wealth creators. For that reason, we have a very low corporate tax regime and a number of instruments that can be used to minimise tax, yet we have this scale of evasion. With all due respect to the much improved revenue collection facilities, the settlement does not owe anything to the Revenue Commissioners but was the result of...

Order of Business. (21 Jun 2006)

Pat Rabbitte: I have become very concerned in the past few weeks over the delay regarding the Barr report. I get the impression the Government is trying to delay certain reports until after the Dáil goes into recess. I am very upset about the issue. John Carthy, a young man, was killed in 2000. What kind of modern democracy have we that we still have not got the report in 2006?

Order of Business. (21 Jun 2006)

Pat Rabbitte: I accept that but I really do feel strongly about the matter. I do not want to second-guess the tribunal and am in no position to do so, nor do I want to apportion blame, but I really feel the killing of John Carthy in the given circumstances was needless. Now, six years later, we are only to receive the report after the Dáil goes into recess. This is not demonstrating any respect for either...
