Seanad: Order of Business (12 Jan 2011)

Paul Coghlan: -----but it is not necessary. I ask the Leader to refer to that when replying. I support the calls for a debate on the Hunt report. It is an important document and I would like to hear the Leader give a commitment on that also.

Seanad: Water Services: Motion (12 Jan 2011)

Paul Coghlan: I welcome the Minister of State and wish him well. He took us by surprise with his recent announcement. Members of this House have always known him to be a decent and honourable man. I wish him very well and I admire him for his decency. As previous speakers indicated, this is an important motion. There is no doubt that the pipes by means of which water is supplied to homes, businesses...

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Jan 2011)

Paul Coghlan: We have been long accustomed to the occasional story of the existence of a golden circle. In light of recent revelations, however, it appears there was an inner sanctum within the golden circle, centred round Anglo Irish Bank and the people prominently associated with it. What is Leader's take on this?

Seanad: Order of Business (13 Jan 2011)

Paul Coghlan: Senator Hanafin proposed the Seanad scrutinises EU matters with MEPs present in the Chamber, a proposal promised by the Leader a long time ago. Both sides of the House feel such a move would be very important. Where do we stand now on this proposal? Touching on Senator MacSharry's point, I am also concerned about job creation. Large numbers of apprentices were hindered in completing their...

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jan 2011)

Paul Coghlan: I will comment further on that later.

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jan 2011)

Paul Coghlan: The Leader may have meant well last week when he responded to my question on the remainder of the legislative programme but clearly his response was not comprehensive because it did not list, for example, the Environment (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill. I note Second Stage of that Bill is to be heard in the other House tomorrow. We will not call that an error.

Seanad: Order of Business (19 Jan 2011)

Paul Coghlan: Yes. However, as other speakers noted a meeting is taking place today between the Taoiseach and the leader of the Green Party. The Leader should give the House a proper comprehensive update tomorrow because last week he did not have the right information regarding legislative priorities. Senator Twomey mentioned the need for the Minister for Finance, Deputy Brian Lenihan, to come to the...

Seanad: Climate Change Response Bill 2010: Second Stage (Resumed) (19 Jan 2011)

Paul Coghlan: He will give the Senator an honest view. The vote is a separate matter.

Seanad: Climate Change Response Bill 2010: Second Stage (Resumed) (19 Jan 2011)

Paul Coghlan: I welcome the Minister of State. While accepting the need to address climate change and reduce emissions, my party has reservations about this Bill. We are concerned it will tie our hands in ways that exceed the all-party recommendations of the Joint Committee on Climate Change and Energy Security. We should be hesitant in this regard. We have tabled an amendment which would not give the...
