Darren O'Rourke: Ms MacEvilly mentioned energy on this island but my understanding is that it is a different experience in the North. What is different between North and South? What are the reasons she referred to?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Supply and Security: Discussion (30 Aug 2022)
Darren O'Rourke: One of the main points the witnesses have made is about planning and licensing. I have heard that from three contributors. I presume that is among a number of factors.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Energy Supply and Security: Discussion (30 Aug 2022)
Darren O'Rourke: I will pick up on Deputy Whitmore's point on the plans. We need those, although I recognise the constraints in terms of the budgetary cycle, for security of supply, generation capacity and price. It is causing inordinate panic among communities and households. There is a constant feeling of impending doom surrounding further price hikes. The news cycle is full of this stuff. People are...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Sectoral Emissions Ceilings: Engagement with the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications (13 Sep 2022)
Darren O'Rourke: I thank the Minister for attending. It could be believed, from a lot of the public commentary and attention around sectoral emissions ceilings, that the only area of concern was agriculture. It was almost presumed that every other sector would be given a responsibility for the upper end of the carbon budget target range but that is not the case when we see it. I will ask about the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Sectoral Emissions Ceilings: Engagement with the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications (13 Sep 2022)
Darren O'Rourke: I wish to restate the possibility of the Minister’s Department or a central facility where policy proposals and options could be asked as questions and the emissions reductions impact of them could be assessed. Essentially, political parties will launch alternative budgets next week. They will be with confirmed data from the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform and the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Sectoral Emissions Ceilings: Engagement with the Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications (13 Sep 2022)
Darren O'Rourke: I wish to come back to comments made by Senator Pauline O'Reilly and address the political charge that was made. I will correct the record in that regard, if I can. It is not correct to say that only one party failed to offer a position in advance of the announcement of the sectoral emissions ceilings. I would suggest that two parties in government did not offer a position and their only...

- Ceisteanna ar Pholasaí nó ar Reachtaíocht - Questions on Policy or Legislation (14 Sep 2022)
Darren O'Rourke: It did. The fact is that less concessionary tickets will be available this year than ever before. Why was priority not given to those people who applied on time? It has significantly reduced the number of concessionary tickets that are available. Very many of those people have been using the service for years. The Government needs to find a solution for those children.

- Measures to Assist with Household Bills: Motion [Private Members] (14 Sep 2022)
Darren O'Rourke: I move: That Dáil Éireann: notes: — the latest round of announcements of electricity price hikes ranging from 27 per cent to 34 per cent to take effect next month; and — that households are dealing with annual electricity bills, some €1,000 higher than they were a year ago; condemns the constant dithering by this Government despite the urgency of the...
