Seanad: Agriculture and Fisheries: Statements, Questions and Answers (20 Jul 2011)

Maurice Cummins: We only have until 2.15 p.m to deal with fisheries. Perhaps the Minister can give us a short outline at the beginning and we will deal with questions. We have eaten into the time. Members complained about not getting to contribute and ask questions. Some Members contributed three or four times and we must legislate against it in future so that we allow other people in. Everyone will have...

Seanad: Agriculture and Fisheries: Statements, Questions and Answers (20 Jul 2011)

Maurice Cummins: I was hoping we would confine our remarks to questions and that we would have a maximum of three minutes for questions. I will be very brief. The Minister has addressed questions on Commissioner Damanaki's proposals relating to discounts and transferable quotas. He might address also the Hague preferences pertaining to the whitefish fleet. When will he be announcing decisions on the...

Seanad: Agriculture and Fisheries: Statements, Questions and Answers (20 Jul 2011)

Maurice Cummins: I thank the Minister for coming before the House. This is the first experiment the Seanad has had with questions and answers. While we can tweak the procedure for conducting our business, this is a good example of how Senators should do business in future, primarily because of the expertise and assistance provided by the Minister. I thank him for responding to all the questions posed.

Seanad: Order of Business (21 Jul 2011)

Maurice Cummins: Senator Darragh O'Brien and many others referred to the negotiations by EU leaders. We welcome the fact that everybody wishes the Taoiseach well in these. I have full confidence in his ability to achieve the best possible outcome for this country. That is what everybody in this House wishes for. I hope to have the Minister for Finance in the House to discuss the capital programme. He was...

As a result, Committee Stage will conclude at 3 p.m. and Report and Final Stages will be taken thereafter and will conclude no later than 4 p.m. This will give Senators additional time in which to discuss matters on Committee...

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2011: Committee Stage (Resumed). (21 Jul 2011)

Maurice Cummins: The hot potato is the question the commission will grasp. The independent commission must make decisions on boundaries. Senator Cullinane wants the commission to extend the constituency boundary into the area of Kilkenny where he is living.

Seanad: Electoral (Amendment) Bill 2011: Committee Stage (Resumed). (21 Jul 2011)

Seanad: Order of Business. (26 Jul 2011)

Maurice Cummins: Senator O'Brien and others spoke about the dreadful situation in Norway. I join with the House in expressing our deepest sympathy to the people of Norway. To think that such an atrocity as the shootings happened at a gathering of young people. As Senator Bacik stated, all of our parties have summer gatherings where young people enjoy themselves. To see what happened in Norway was...

Seanad: Order of Business. (26 Jul 2011)

Maurice Cummins: Sinn Féin always had a policy on putting money in banks. They were more interested in taking it out of banks for many years. Senator Harte also raised the RAS scheme which, as I said, could be addressed by tabling an Adjournment matter. Senator Byrne raised the issue of the flat rate property charge, which is a matter for the Cabinet. I welcome his comments and those of many other Members...
