- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Education Needs of Visually Impaired Students: Discussion (23 May 2023)
Mairéad Farrell: I thank our guests for what has been a really fascinating discussion. I read the opening statements and have listened to the conversation, which has been eye-opening, to be honest. It has been really interesting. One of the issues I had looked at was the equitable education report, which was discussed earlier. That report stated that there are 4,700 visually impaired children of...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Education and Skills: Education Needs of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students: Discussion (23 May 2023)
Mairéad Farrell: It has been fascinating to read Mr. Geary's opening statement and to hear what he had to say and the discussion we have had today, which has given me a much deeper understanding. Regarding the movement to third level education, obviously universities have considerable autonomy. Is there a coherent approach among the universities or do some universities have greater focus? I went to NUIG,...

Do the witnesses think there is an issue that people are points-driven going into these courses...

Mairéad Farrell: I lost my train of thought after the vote interrupted us. The working group for reform in Irish veterinary education was very clear in its opening statement that its preference is the University of Limerick, UL. I am interested in what it envisages in terms of the numbers of students. We see there is obviously a deficit at the moment. What levels do we need to train to ensure we meet the...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: New School of Veterinary Medicine: Discussion (Resumed) (24 May 2023)
Mairéad Farrell: We see that so many students go to Warsaw and a lot simply do not return. What are the main reasons for the students not returning? Is it because the way they get taught there is different or because they build a life there? Is that the concern regarding that?
