- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Safety Strategy: Discussion (8 Feb 2017)
Frank Feighan: We had a love affair with alcohol, but over the past 30 years we have done a lot to stop drink driving. I was always amused to hear that many people did not drink and drive, not because they could have killed themselves or somebody else, but because they could have lost their driving licence and be put off the road. Penalties, including fines, have made a huge difference in making people...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Road Safety Strategy: Discussion (8 Feb 2017)
Frank Feighan: I thank the Minister for his invitation, but I am happy to stay in the Upper House.
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2017)
Frank Feighan: These are very difficult times in the health service. I have used six hospitals in the past two months, including Temple Street Hospital for my child, as well as hospitals in Sligo, Roscommon and Galway. Unfortunately, on two occasions ambulances had to be called as advanced paramedics were required to treat my mother and another member of my family. I cannot compliment the staff and...
- Seanad: Order of Business (9 Feb 2017)
Frank Feighan: There is no point arguing on that one.
- Seanad: Action Plan for Rural Development: Statements (9 Feb 2017)
Frank Feighan: I am delighted to have this opportunity to speak about the Action Plan for Rural Development. At the heart of this plan is a clear and targeted commitment to improve the lives of those living and working in rural areas. This is the first time we have had a comprehensive action plan to support and revitalise rural Ireland, an action for which I compliment the Minister. I know she is...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement: Implications for Good Friday Agreement of UK Referendum Result (Resumed): Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform (9 Feb 2017)
Frank Feighan: I welcome the Minister. Brexit has taken up a great deal of time in all sectors because it is one of the most serious issues to hit our country, this island, the UK and Europe for many years. I was at two conferences, one in Carrick on Shannon a few weeks ago chaired by the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, about the impact on jobs. Last Monday I was at an all-Ireland...
- Seanad: Order of Business (14 Feb 2017)
Frank Feighan: I also welcome the decision to hold a public inquiry on the situation involving Sergeant Maurice McCabe and hope the truth will come out. It has been a difficult few years for the McCabe family and now we will have the right mechanism to get to the truth which must be heard. I want to raise an issue which I do not particularly like raising. On the way to Dublin this morning I was listening...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Illicit Trade in Fuel and Tobacco Products (15 Feb 2017)
Frank Feighan: I will address the need for the Minister for Finance to ensure all necessary resources are available to the Revenue Commissioners in order to protect the livelihoods of solid fuel traders located near the Border in light of the price differential in the North and the continued threat of fuel smuggling. I thank the Minister for coming before the House today. I am glad to get the opportunity...
- Seanad: Commencement Matters: Illicit Trade in Fuel and Tobacco Products (15 Feb 2017)
Frank Feighan: I thank the Minister for coming to the House and outlining the position. I urge the Minister to continue to engage on this matter with the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment. We all know that Department is responsible for regulating solid fuel in the State. The Minister is aware, as are many other Members of the Houses of the Oireachtas, that this issue is...
- Seanad: Order of Business (15 Feb 2017)
Frank Feighan: I join my colleague in calling for the matter of the beds that are supposed to be closed in the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dún Laoghaire to be rectified. I agree with Senator Gavan that these matters should be highlighted. One good news item is that representatives of the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dún Laoghaire met representatives of Roscommon County Hospital in...

Frank Feighan: We ran out of money in 2010.
- Seanad: Order of Business (16 Feb 2017)
Frank Feighan: The Senator can foresee many things.
- Seanad: Order of Business (16 Feb 2017)
Frank Feighan: Yesterday, members of the Joint Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement were invited to meet members of the Likud Party in the Knesset in Israel and many religious leaders. They were very interested in the Good Friday Agreement, which brought peace to this country, in effect. I reminded them that the Anglo-Irish Agreement was the forerunner of the Good Friday Agreement....
- Seanad: Order of Business (1 Mar 2017)
Frank Feighan: I, too, would like to be associated with the remarks made about the late former Deputy Peter Matthews. He was a great friend and colleague and always available to give advice when one needed it. Our thoughts are with his family. He was a decent man. Last night there was a CHAMPevent. The aim is to promote dialogue and co-operation between Deputies, MPs, Lords, Members of the Scottish...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Mar 2017)
Frank Feighan: We are in the middle of a crisis but we should note that the NTA has done great work in rural areas to provide a service, particularly where there was never one before. That fact could be missed because people are very angry about the current crisis. I see that the Expressway only provides 10% of school transport. What percentage is school transport in terms of the remaining 90%?
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Mar 2017)
Frank Feighan: I do not know who releases these figures. I do not think school transport should not be included in the figures. It is disingenuous to use school transport figure in the overall figure.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Mar 2017)
Frank Feighan: Yes.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Mar 2017)
Frank Feighan: Yes. School transport is a different type of service.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Mar 2017)
Frank Feighan: We can agree to differ.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport, Tourism and Sport: Bus Éireann: Discussion (Resumed) (1 Mar 2017)
Frank Feighan: It is not that I want less information. I suggest that the inclusion of the school transport figures means that the Department has used a bit more imagination and that it needs to do so.
