- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Retrofitting Schemes: Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (11 Oct 2022)
Richard Bruton: One of the groups I am interested in is small enterprises and how they are taking up opportunities. There was recent publicity about the fact not having a fridge door on your fridge means you could halve your energy use by simply retrofitting a door to it. Is that sort of initiative by a small business open to support? I am aware of the EXEED scheme and so on but they sound like much...

- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action: Retrofitting Schemes: Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (11 Oct 2022)
Richard Bruton: Either they do or do not cut energy use. If they are efficient at cutting energy use, surely there is a benefit for carbon, energy use and the whole nine yards.
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Minimum Wage, Cost of Living and Low Pay Commission Report: Engagement with ICTU (12 Oct 2022)
Richard Bruton: I welcome our guests. It is good to renew old friendships. I think the Government's objective, which is in line with my belief, is that we need the fastest sustainable move to the living wage, but we do not have IBEC or any other employer representatives before the committee during this meeting, so I will put to our guests what I hear from small business. It is looking at the 1.5%...
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Minimum Wage, Cost of Living and Low Pay Commission Report: Engagement with ICTU (12 Oct 2022)
Richard Bruton: I do not really dispute what Mr. Berney is saying. The one issue at the back of my mind is that there will be an end of tax warehousing and the end of the employment wage subsidy scheme, EWSS. There is an energy support that some people will say is inadequate-----
- Joint Oireachtas Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation: Minimum Wage, Cost of Living and Low Pay Commission Report: Engagement with ICTU (12 Oct 2022)
Richard Bruton: -----for some vulnerable businesses. There is a balance that the Government is trying to strike. That may explain why phasing is an area. People are saying that we should walk out on the ice slowly to make sure that it holds us up.

- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Departmental Priorities (20 Oct 2022)
Richard Bruton: I would be interested in learning of the Minister's priorities. What I hear from ordinary members of the public is frustration in respect of appropriate and consistent sentencing, support for the position of victims in the system and the need to embed the multi-agency approach she has been successfully rolling out in a number of particularly difficult communities. I would like that...
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Departmental Priorities (20 Oct 2022)
Richard Bruton: I am heartened by the Minister's response. The speed of implementation will be the issue. I will ask her about other issues I am concerned about. There is still a sense among the public that appropriate and consistent sentencing is not a feature. It causes immense upset to feel that some serious cases are not treated seriously enough by the courts while the opposite occurs in other cases....
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Departmental Priorities (20 Oct 2022)
Richard Bruton: I am happy with the Minister's reply. Consistency of sentencing remains a problem but I realise there are limits to what a Minister can do in respect of decisions taken by courts.

- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Antisocial Behaviour (20 Oct 2022)
Richard Bruton: Since Covid, a lot of people feel antisocial behaviour has rapidly deteriorated, has shifted its pattern and is perhaps even worse than it was pre Covid. What are the trends in what is being reported to the Minister? What innovative approaches is the Minister considering in this regard? She has outlined some of them already.
- Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Antisocial Behaviour (20 Oct 2022)
Richard Bruton: I am very heartened by the approach the Minister and the Garda have taken on O'Connell Street with the new Garda station, the extra presence and the role of wardens. New York adopted a broken windows strategy when there was a problem there that was quite deep-seated. It involved real-time information and everyone working together and being accountable on a close to daily basis. Is that a...
