Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: CervicalCheck Screening Programme Update: Discussion (Resumed) (3 Apr 2019)

Michael Harty: -----and that has broken down now. The risk is low but the reassurance is missing.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: CervicalCheck Screening Programme Update: Discussion (Resumed) (3 Apr 2019)

Michael Harty: Audit is obviously carried out for quality assurance purposes. It is done to see if the system is working. Is there a place for anonymised audit as opposed to a named audit in which people are identified? Would the former be easier to manage? Would it provide the same information in respect of quality?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: CervicalCheck Screening Programme Update: Discussion (Resumed) (3 Apr 2019)

Michael Harty: Is that system better or worse? It was the failure of the named audit here which led to the controversy. The purpose of audit is to inform quality. No screening service is 100% accurate. Unfortunately, a number of people will always be missed. Obviously the system is working if one compares the 65,000 people who have benefited with the 221 who had their smear upgraded on the audit - or...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health: CervicalCheck Screening Programme Update: Discussion (Resumed) (3 Apr 2019)

Michael Harty: Is it correct that a significant number of the 221 cases have had their cancer successfully treated and are not in a situation where their cancer is untreatable?

Michael Harty: I thank the witnesses. We have been here four hours and it is time to conclude. I thank the witnesses for providing the committee with an update on the backlog which will hopefully be cleared in the not-too-distant future.

Fibromyalgia: Statements (4 Apr 2019)

Michael Harty: Fibromyalgia is a very difficult condition to diagnose and treat. I know that from my own profession. The difficulty in diagnosis, as others have said, is there is no clinical or biochemical marker that will give an exact diagnosis. Most commonly, it is a diagnosis of exclusion. Having gone through all the various conditions that could be leading to chronic pain and stiffness in muscles,...

Fibromyalgia: Statements (4 Apr 2019)

Michael Harty: Deputy Kenny and I have many conversations about this. He is absolutely correct that the Minister is dragging his heels when it comes to providing an access programme for the three conditions. The Health Products Regulatory Authority has not found evidence that cannabis-based products are a treatment for pain. This is a debatable issue, however. The Minister of State, Deputy Catherine...

Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 38 - Health (Further Revised)
(10 Apr 2019)

Michael Harty: I want to establish the issue we are discussing today. I know the Minister is happy to respond but as Chair I need to state we are here to discuss the Estimates. There is of course a reference in the Estimates to the revision of the capital allocation to health. It is fine if the Minister is willing to answer those questions. I just wanted to establish that.

Select Committee on Health: Estimates for Public Services 2019
Vote 38 - Health (Further Revised)
(10 Apr 2019)

Michael Harty: I come back to the Estimates, the topic for today. The briefing document states that funding has been provided for CervicalCheck and the introduction of HPV testing as a primary screening test. Perhaps the Minister will elaborate on that and how close are we to moving towards HPV testing, which will revolutionise the screening programme and reduce the burden on cytology which is the reason...
