Written Answers — Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport: Driving Licences (13 Feb 2013)

Michael Healy-Rae: To ask the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport if, people who have been driving for more than 35 years, who are accident free and have no endorsements, have never made a court appearance with regard to road related issues and who are not in possession of a full driver’s licence, should be provided with a full licence and classified as a special case; and if he will make a...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (13 Feb 2013)

Michael Healy-Rae: I support the Senator in stating that obviously this is a devastating issue for the family involved and an awful trauma for them. Unfortunately I agree this appears to be a case that should be heard in the courts and it is not within our remit to deal with this very serious matter. I hope a worthwhile solution can be found for everybody involved and that there will be a successful outcome...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (13 Feb 2013)

Michael Healy-Rae: I compliment Senator Ó Clochartaigh on the work he has done on this important issue prior to its coming before the committee. I appreciate the serious circumstances in which up to 80 families find themselves. My heart is with them. At the end of the day the planning process is in place. If the wind farm company went through the process and did everything properly, I am absolutely...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: EU Proposals on Roadworthiness Testing: Discussion with Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (13 Feb 2013)

Michael Healy-Rae: I apologise for having to leave before the presentation to go to the Chamber. I welcome Mr. Treacy, Mr. Baker and the others here. There is nobody in the country who was not heartbroken last week hearing of a beautiful young boy being killed in a farm accident. Therefore, there is no way I would not compliment the officials here and those who work with them on their efforts in striving to...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: EU Proposals on Roadworthiness Testing: Discussion with Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (13 Feb 2013)

Michael Healy-Rae: Like Deputy McGrath, I am concerned about the derogations we have got. How sure can we be that unbearable, unsustainable financial burdens will not be put on farmers or people with cars by reducing the testing from ten years to six years? We must safeguard these people from financial ruin as a result of trying to comply with unnecessary regulations that are not applicable to them.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: EU Proposals on Roadworthiness Testing: Discussion with Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (13 Feb 2013)

Michael Healy-Rae: Is Mr. Treacy stating that the person who turns back a mileage meter on a car is not committing an offence, but the person selling the car knowingly is? Is that what Mr. Treacy said?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: EU Proposals on Roadworthiness Testing: Discussion with Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (13 Feb 2013)

Michael Healy-Rae: Is that not a crazy situation? It is a specialist job to do that with digital mileage meters. Is it the case that the people who engage in that are not committing an offence?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: EU Proposals on Roadworthiness Testing: Discussion with Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (13 Feb 2013)

Michael Healy-Rae: I warmly welcome the witnesses, in particular Mr. Higginson. I appreciate much of what Mr. Brett said in the clarification he gave but I am a little confused by what Mr. O'Halloran said. On the issue of farm accidents, one can have a perfectly safe tractor but one could have it on pit of silage and back off it when packing the silage, hit one's head and die. The tractor could comply with...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications: EU Proposals on Roadworthiness Testing: Discussion with Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport (13 Feb 2013)

Michael Healy-Rae: Yes and on where the Health and Safety Authority stands on that. In terms of contractors who do work for hire, be it involving the use of tractors or other machinery, we know that if one has a track machine for one's own use one does not need a reversing camera on it but if the machine is for hire, it is compulsory to have one. It is a completely different operation when one has machinery...

Leaders' Questions (14 Feb 2013)

Michael Healy-Rae: We want to look forward, not backwards.

Leaders' Questions (14 Feb 2013)

Michael Healy-Rae: Stay quiet over there and show some manners and show respect to the Leas-Cheann Comhairle.

Leaders' Questions (14 Feb 2013)

Michael Healy-Rae: What Deputy Griffin said is a disgrace.

Leaders' Questions (14 Feb 2013)

Michael Healy-Rae: I agree with the Leas-Cheann Comhairle. It is a disgrace.

Promissory Notes: Motion (Resumed) (14 Feb 2013)

Michael Healy-Rae: I thank the Technical Group for allowing me some of its time. Recently, Fintan O'Toole wrote an article entitled "Debt deal is normalising the Irish freak show". The article started:There is the old story of the 18th century French lothario sitting at dinner beside a famously virtuous lady. "Will you sleep with me?" he asks. "Certainly not, how dare you suggest such a thing!" "Let us...

Promissory Notes: Motion (Resumed) (14 Feb 2013)

Michael Healy-Rae: Mr. O'Toole pointed out that "last week’s deal was all about grand [theft] on an almost unimaginable scale [being] transformed into a plain, boring old fact". I remind the House that before the 2011 general election, the current Minister, Deputy Varadkar, insisted that "Anglo Irish Bank is not getting another cent of our money - Not another cent"?

Promissory Notes: Motion (Resumed) (14 Feb 2013)

Michael Healy-Rae: He can tell that to his grandchildren. The public is not fooled by the Government's spin. The people know they will give decades working to see their hard-earned money leaving the country to pay for debt that they never had a hand, act or part in incurring in the first instance. This is a shame. Regardless of how much spin the Government puts on it, nothing will ever take from these...
