Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (8 Mar 2022)

Pippa Hackett: Are there many before me? I do not mind-----

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (8 Mar 2022)

Pippa Hackett: I will also speak about International Women's Day. I believe it should be a time of review and reflection. Typically, it fills me with hope and renewed commitment to the cause of equality. This year's theme, break the bias, certainly hammers that home. I am also using this week to reflect on lessons learned from some of the amazing women from the midlands I have had the privilege to meet...

Seanad: Sea-Fisheries (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2021: Report and Final Stages (8 Mar 2022)

Pippa Hackett: Yes I will take those amendments as grouped. The effects of these amendments taken together appears to be to expand the scope of the points system for masters provided for under the Bill currently, to encompass masters who are citizens of another member state, as distinct from Irish citizens. The amendments would require, in effect, that the Minister would have to set up a register to cover...

Seanad: Sea-Fisheries (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2021: Report and Final Stages (8 Mar 2022)

Pippa Hackett: I thank the Acting Chairperson and Senators for their constructive contributions on the Sea-Fisheries (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2021. I and the Government appreciate their constructive engagement. Implementation of the points system is very urgent given the long delay since 2012, the ongoing EU infringement proceedings and the suspension of funding by the European Union through the...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 Mar 2022)

Pippa Hackett: Am I coming in ahead of someone else?

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 Mar 2022)

Pippa Hackett: I think I may have skipped about two people.

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (9 Mar 2022)

Pippa Hackett: I need to speak doubly quick now or I will run out of time. Our economic system is having detrimental impacts on our planet. While the current crisis in Ukraine is first and foremost a humanitarian crisis and we cannot and must not lose sight of that reality, it highlights nonetheless just how quickly difficulties can arise when our needs are dependent on imports. The past few months,...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (23 Mar 2022)

Pippa Hackett: I offer a warm welcome to the deputy ambassador from Greece and my sympathies to the ambassador, Ekaterini Simopoulou. I had a wonderful trip to Athens last week as part of the St. Patrick's Day celebrations so it is great to see our colleagues in the Chamber. Of late, there have been a number of calls for the reopening of midlands bogs as a solution to rising energy costs but these calls...

Seanad: An tOrd Gnó - Order of Business (6 Apr 2022)

Pippa Hackett: In light of this morning's historic, powerful and emotive address from President Zelenskyy and at a time of increasing pressure on homeowners, businesses and farmers, it is crystal clear we must do everything we can to starve Russia from its fossil fuel funds. One way we can do that is by increasing our rates of renewable energy production in any way we can. Each of us has a potential role...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Afforestation and the Forestry Sector: Discussion (13 Apr 2022)

Pippa Hackett: I thank the Chair. It is good to be here this morning. I am joined by Mr. Barry Delany, director of forestry, and Mr. Kevin Collins from the environment section. I thank the Chair and the committee for the invitation to address them today. I acknowledge the committee's continuing interest in forestry. I certainly welcome the opportunity to update members on progress in implementing the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Afforestation and the Forestry Sector: Discussion (13 Apr 2022)

Pippa Hackett: I thank the Deputies for their comments and observations. I appreciate and accept how worried the committee is about the future of forestry. It is not only the future of the sector but certainly the future of us meeting targets and dealing with our climate ambitions. Everyone is concerned about it and certainly, the recent comments of Ms Marie Donnelly in terms of how we are reaching our...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Afforestation and the Forestry Sector: Discussion (13 Apr 2022)

Pippa Hackett: I hope we can meet that target as soon as possible.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Afforestation and the Forestry Sector: Discussion (13 Apr 2022)

Pippa Hackett: Obviously, it is something we all want to reach. I like to think that perhaps the small-scale legislation might enable farmers to dip their feet into planting trees without going the whole hog of having a plantation because the big issue is that farmers see they are taking land out of use on the farm. Those will all add up.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Afforestation and the Forestry Sector: Discussion (13 Apr 2022)

Pippa Hackett: I certainly like to think so. Otherwise, we will have failed.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Afforestation and the Forestry Sector: Discussion (13 Apr 2022)

Pippa Hackett: Okay. Finally-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Afforestation and the Forestry Sector: Discussion (13 Apr 2022)

Pippa Hackett: I am sorry for taking too long. On the ash dieback scheme, it is something that keeps arising. We have people engaging with the reconstitution and underplanting scheme, RUS.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Afforestation and the Forestry Sector: Discussion (13 Apr 2022)

Pippa Hackett: That is fair enough, but we have people engaging with that. One can compare it with tuberculosis, TB, compensation. In that case the farmer is compensated for the removal of the animal and the value of the animal, but that is it. The scheme does not compensate the farmer for all the calves the cow may have had or the milk she might have produced so-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Afforestation and the Forestry Sector: Discussion (13 Apr 2022)

Pippa Hackett: Is that not factored into the-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Afforestation and the Forestry Sector: Discussion (13 Apr 2022)

Pippa Hackett: In a long-term sense, I thought it was just that, but perhaps I am corrected-----

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Afforestation and the Forestry Sector: Discussion (13 Apr 2022)

Pippa Hackett: Yes, if he or she is restricted.
