Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2021: From the Seanad (14 Jul 2021)

Danny Healy-Rae: Of course the sequestering of carbon will have to be counted. My worry from the outset was that farmers would not be allowed the carbon they sequestered. I contend that many farmers are sequestering more carbon than they are producing. I worry that the calculations are supposed to take seven years to account for what farmers are sequestering and how efficient they are. Many farmers are...

Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2021: From the Seanad (14 Jul 2021)

Danny Healy-Rae: I am finishing up. It is not even worth the Leas-Cheann Comhairle's while cutting across me. I will finish up on that. The Government has done nothing at all for them and the way it is going, it will not have done anything for them.

Maritime Jurisdiction Bill 2021: Committee and Remaining Stages (14 Jul 2021)

Danny Healy-Rae: I also want to speak on behalf of the fishermen of our country. I refer to fishermen operating right around our coasts from Castletownbere, Dingle and Berehaven and all areas along the west coast, whether in counties Mayo, Donegal or wherever. These fishermen have been badly let down. Being let down is now being compounded by other issues as well, including the sacking of the former...

Maritime Jurisdiction Bill 2021: Committee and Remaining Stages (14 Jul 2021)

Danny Healy-Rae: I will. I am finishing up. It would be remiss of me as an elected representative if I did not defend people from coastal communities to ensure they survive. They are at a crossroads now, like the hospitality sector. Who is going to be affected again only our rural areas? We do not want any further demise of those areas because they are gone down and gone back far enough.

Finance (Local Property Tax) (Amendment) Bill 2021: Committee and Remaining Stages (14 Jul 2021)

Danny Healy-Rae: I am glad to get the opportunity to support this amendment. As I understand it, the property tax was meant to be a residential tax. It now looks like if the farmer has a henhouse or a dog house, those hens or dogs will be charged the property tax as well. The amount of land around the property is to be increased to a hectare, which is 2.5 acres, which is totally unfair. This is like the...

Select Committee on Health: Nursing Homes Support Scheme (Amendment) Bill 2021: Committee Stage (30 Jun 2021)

Danny Healy-Rae: I realised that in section 3-----

Select Committee on Health: Nursing Homes Support Scheme (Amendment) Bill 2021: Committee Stage (30 Jun 2021)

Danny Healy-Rae: We skipped amendment No. 2, which mentions: "that the relevant person declares by way of declaration". In other words, the amendment states that the-----

Select Committee on Health: Nursing Homes Support Scheme (Amendment) Bill 2021: Committee Stage (30 Jun 2021)

Danny Healy-Rae: There was an interruption and I was thrown off my line. Amendment No. 2 was seeking that the person in charge of the farm could legally lease it. If there was a young family and the woman or man of the house did not have the wherewithal to run the farm, this amendment sought that she or he would be allowed to lease it out. That is not allowed and that is unfair.

Select Committee on Health: Nursing Homes Support Scheme (Amendment) Bill 2021: Committee Stage (30 Jun 2021)

Danny Healy-Rae: I cannot understand where the charge is there. I appeal to the Minister of State to look at that.

Select Committee on Health: Nursing Homes Support Scheme (Amendment) Bill 2021: Committee Stage (30 Jun 2021)

Danny Healy-Rae: No.

Select Committee on Health: Nursing Homes Support Scheme (Amendment) Bill 2021: Committee Stage (30 Jun 2021)

Danny Healy-Rae: The amendment I proposed is one I have felt strongly about since I came up here in 2016. I do not believe it is fair that the family farm is taken into consideration as part of the application for the fair deal scheme. It is not fair on the person taking over the farm and trying to run the business. That asset is a tool for gaining an income for the family but it is taken into the...

Select Committee on Health: Nursing Homes Support Scheme (Amendment) Bill 2021: Committee Stage (30 Jun 2021)

Danny Healy-Rae: I listened to the Minister of State's reply on the cost of the fair deal scheme. This Bill is about ensuring the scheme is a fair deal for the farming and business community. I appreciate the cap and it is good that it has been brought forward. I also appreciate the Minister of State's point that it will still cost a great deal. I strongly support Deputy Naughten's request to include...

Confidence in Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence: Motion (15 Sep 2021)

Danny Healy-Rae: I believe we are elected here to do a different type of work altogether. We were elected to represent people that need caring or that need to go into hospital. Our hospital service is in a ramshackle condition in Kerry and west Cork. The cost of living is going up and no one is saying anything about it. The cost of fuel, petrol and diesel is doing likewise. How will old people pay for...

Ceisteanna ó Cheannairí - Leaders' Questions (16 Sep 2021)

Danny Healy-Rae: I wish to raise with the Tánaiste a very urgent, serious problem that has erupted for the people of Bunane, Kenmare and on the west Cork side, Glengarriff and Bantry. A serious problem has arisen whereby Transport Infrastructure Ireland, TII, proposes to close the N71 Caha Pass tunnel between Cork and Kerry for ten weeks from 4 November. Everyone appreciates the work it proposes to...
