Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (7 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: What about the Mullingar accord?

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (7 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: I join with the Cathaoirleach in welcoming here today the former Senator Brian Mullooley, after 21 years of service to this House. We also welcome former Deputy and Senator, Martin Joe O'Toole, who is also returning on this very historic day. I wish the Taoiseach every success. He is retiring only as Taoiseach and is not retiring from public life. He will be prominent in the years ahead....

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (7 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: I want to be associated with the best wishes that have been extended to the Minister, Deputy Séamus Brennan. He is a wonderful, brilliant, intelligent Minister and he was a great general secretary of Fianna Fáil who led us to victory in 1977 and was responsible for me being a Dáil candidate that year. I thank Séamus for that.

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (7 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: I appreciate that but this is a special day, as the Cathaoirleach will acknowledge. The commemoration at Arbour Hill this morning was a wonderful occasion and start to the business today. I compliment Reverend Christopher Jones, Bishop of Elfin, who gave a wonderful homily. I hope it will be published and distributed throughout the country, as it was a great assessment of where we were,...

Seanad: Order of Business (Resumed) (7 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government needs to consider this system afresh. The referendum will be on 12 June, the count will take place on 13 and 14 June and 500 million people will look at our results following the election. It would be a wonderful indication of our progression if we could give the results one or two hours after the close of polls on the evening...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: RTE should be complimented as a public service broadcaster on its very courageous programme last night on bullying in schools. It shows that public service broadcasting is very effective. Those who contributed to the programme were very courageous. Looking at the programme I felt some very vulnerable young people were involved and they should be given every support by the HSE, services and...

Seanad: Order of Business (20 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: Yes, it would be worthwhile to debate this but as a matter of urgency I suggest to all school principals that this programme should be shown in every school in the country and a discussion had on what happened in that programme and the effect on young people. This would bring it to the attention of the principals and others involved. I call on the Minister for Education and Science, Deputy...

Terry Leyden: The HSE was established with the support of Fine Gael.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: I ask the Leader of the House——

Seanad: Order of Business (20 May 2008)

Seanad: Order of Business (20 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: We are in a democracy.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: Fortunately, this Chamber is a democratic forum and we can raise issues such as this.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: We will not be dictated to by Senator Buttimer on what we raise in this House in the best interests of our constituents——

Seanad: Order of Business (20 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: ——and we will raise it here and in a different forum. We have an opportunity in this House for more ongoing discussions as far as health is concerned, and the HSE should brief Members. No Oireachtas Member in Roscommon has been briefed as far as the removal of funding——

Seanad: Order of Business (20 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: No Oireachtas Member in Roscommon has been briefed as far as the removal of acute surgery services to Ballinasloe is concerned.

Seanad: Order of Business (20 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: In fairness, Oireachtas Members have a right and a responsibility——

Seanad: Order of Business (20 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: ——to be briefed and I call on the Leader of the House to arrange an early debate on the ongoing developments of palliative care. Under that specific heading, we should discuss the outrage in Roscommon that we are losing this planned eight-bed unit which would provide tremendous service for those with very serious illnesses.

Seanad: Order of Business (21 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: I withdraw the remark I made here on 30 January 2008 about the Director of Public Prosecutions. It was not my intention to cause any embarrassment to the House or to the Chair.

Seanad: Transport 21: Motion (21 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: The Senator's time is well up and the train is moving on.

Seanad: Order of Business (22 May 2008)

Terry Leyden: I refer to the issues raised by Senator Norris. No. 14 on the Order Paper is Statements on the Lisbon Treaty, which can be resumed. Many issues have arisen and it would be useful in the context of the campaign to have them clarified in the House by Ministers. That would serve a good purpose and I ask the Leader to consider that. Many different stories have been put out by the "No"...
