Paul Coghlan: I told some of them my views yesterday.
- Seanad: Order of Business (2 Jul 2010)
Paul Coghlan: I support strongly the comments made by Senator Fitzgerald on the Ombudsman and the HSE. The Ombudsman's report is an official, damning indictment of that body which is dysfunctional in so many ways. I refer to the comments made by Senator O'Toole. During the years I have always found it is possible to engage in a happy discourse with most people in front of the gates of Leinster House....
- Seanad: Order of Business (2 Jul 2010)
Paul Coghlan: However, what we witnessed yesterday in front of Parliament buildings was not acceptable. I ask the Leader to bring this to the attention of whoever should be dealing with it and add my voice to others who have suggested that we look a how we can arrange for more peaceful protests to take place. I refer to the Central Bank Reform Bill, about which I asked the Leader yesterday. As we are...

Paul Coghlan: It is bad management.
- Seanad: Order of Business (6 Jul 2010)
Paul Coghlan: I am concerned by the issues raised by my colleagues, Senators Cummins and O'Toole. With regard to the Central Bank Reform Bill, would it not be better to use the time more judiciously, with a gap between Second and Remaining Stages? A sos would allow Members to table amendments for Committee Stage. It seems the Leader is seeking to kaleidoscope the whole issue from 7.30 p.m. without a...

- Seanad: Central Bank Reform Bill 2010: Second Stage (6 Jul 2010)
Paul Coghlan: I welcome the Minister and thank him for his detailed overview of the Bill. Nobody doubts his bona fides or his intent. He has done many good things, all of which we welcome, beginning with the appointment of Professor Honohan as Governor of the Central Bank and Mr. Elderfield as Financial Regulator and the provision of the preliminary reports on the banking crisis by the Governor and Mr....

Paul Coghlan: And so say all of us.
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 Jul 2010)
Paul Coghlan: Yesterday's announcement on NAMA is disappointing and disturbing. It clearly shows that the business plan produced last year was a complete fantasy. We now know that 25% rather than 40% of the transferred loans are producing income. Basically, the banks supplied inaccurate information. Some of the people responsible for this remain at the top in the boards and senior management of the...
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 Jul 2010)
Paul Coghlan: I ask the Leader about the conflicts of interest that might arise and what the Minister and his Department are doing about them. We are now being told there will be 2,000 job losses among the staff of the banks. I do not think a single person working in a bank branch should lose his or her job unless those at the top who are responsible for the appalling mess are rooted out.
- Seanad: Order of Business (7 Jul 2010)
Paul Coghlan: The Leader should read section 35(2C) of that Bill.
