Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (23 Mar 2023)

Martin Browne: If a family pays for an assessment, it should be reimbursed. I have met the Darmody family. One of its concerns is that the mother has suddenly become a full-time 24 hour carer which, if it were a full-time job, would work out at €1.25 per hour. That is what the carer is getting. We will pass the petition on the relevant bodies and see what comes back. The response will then be...

I invite members of the public to submit petitions via our online portal, which is available at petitions.oireachtas.ie.A petition may be addressed to the Houses of the Oireachtas on a matter of general public concern or interest or on any issue of public policy. The final point on the agenda is any other...

Committee on Public Petitions: Decisions on Public Petitions Received (23 Mar 2023)

Martin Browne: As always I also want to be associated with that comment. The amount of work that is done by the staff is unreal and makes our job easy.

Residential Tenancies (Deferment of Termination Dates of Certain Tenancies) Bill 2023: Second Stage [Private Members] (28 Mar 2023)

Martin Browne: They do not care and that is the problem.

Residential Tenancies (Deferment of Termination Dates of Certain Tenancies) Bill 2023: Second Stage [Private Members] (28 Mar 2023)

Martin Browne: Sinn Féin could not in all conscience allow the Government to end the eviction ban without doing what we can in the interest of renters across County Tipperary and the whole country to change the Government's mind. If we cannot change the mind of the Government or backbenchers, we must look to the Independents who propped up the Government last week. I use the word "Independent" very...

Select Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Veterinary Medicinal Products, Medicated Feed and Fertilisers Regulation Bill 2023: Committee Stage (29 Mar 2023)

Martin Browne: These amendments arise from concerns expressed by many of the farming organisations about how data would be used under the provisions of the Bill. As Deputy Carthy said, references to anonymity were removed and we propose that the word "anonymised" be reinstated given the concerns expressed to us by the farming organisations.

Post-European Council Meeting: Statements (18 Apr 2023)

Martin Browne: I wish to send best wishes to Ambassador Aidan O'Hara and his family for what they have gone through. At the Committee on Public Petitions earlier this year we discussed with the European Ombudsman various reports, among which was noted the changing world within which the EU operates and the response of the EU institutions to those changes. However, troubling issues remain, such as what...

Vacant Homes Tax: Motion [Private Members] (19 Apr 2023)

Martin Browne: I also thank Deputy Cian O'Callaghan and the Social Democrats for bringing forward the motion. The number of residential properties recorded as vacant in December 2022 was 83,662. That is a significant stock of unused properties and if the correct incentives to dissuade people from allowing their properties to sit idle were in place it would go some way to addressing the housing shortage in...

Courts Bill 2023: Second Stage (19 Apr 2023)

Martin Browne: In a report published by the European Commission last year Ireland was ranked as the worst country in Europe concerning judicial resourcing at 3.27 judges per 100,000 people in 2020. To say this was below the European average is to be kind. The truth of the matter is that the European average is 17.6 judges per 100,000 people. There is a real deficiency there. I am also reminded of the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Recycling Farm Plastics: Discussion (19 Apr 2023)

Martin Browne: Looking through the IFFPG's documentation, I see it receives 75% of its funding through the recycling levy. Mr. Moloney mentioned bring centres around the country that collect 90% of the plastic for recycling.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Recycling Farm Plastics: Discussion (19 Apr 2023)

Martin Browne: Are the four approved collectors located at the bring centres?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Recycling Farm Plastics: Discussion (19 Apr 2023)

Martin Browne: An issue has been raised by independent collectors who feel they are not getting a fair share. The IFFPG only collects 70% of the waste. Independent people are collecting the rest of it and are not getting any share of the levy. Is there a reason for that?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine: Recycling Farm Plastics: Discussion (19 Apr 2023)

Martin Browne: That was my next question. Is Mr. Moloney saying IFFPG has to achieve 70% but is collecting over 90% of the waste around the country?
