Ceisteanna - Questions: Cabinet Committees (4 May 2022)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I raise the issue of housing adaptation grants and the discretion of local authorities to sort out issues. It is Government policy to keep people in their homes as long as possible. I am working with a 103-year-old lady, who has an excellent family. She had some minor work done in the past two years to have her home’s roof and heating fixed, and she came to me a few weeks ago about...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Arts Policy (5 May 2022)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I welcome the funding but I must agree with previous speakers. We were all delighted at Christmas when the Minister, Deputy Catherine Martin, announced funding for the pantomimes. Many had to be cancelled at short notice because of Covid. We have an excellent company in Carlow, Striking Productions. It had to cancel all of its shows, which had been booked out. I met the Minister. A...

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: We know the important role that an independent and well-functioning media sector plays. I ask the Minister of State for an update on the Future of the Media Commission report, including when it will be published.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Departmental Reports (5 May 2022)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: As we progress in our discussions on the future of media in Ireland and see progression of the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022, which is absolutely vital, it is vitally important that the debate and discussions around this are open and informed. The release of the Future of Media Commission report is a central part of this. I welcome the creation of the Future of Media...

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Departmental Reports (5 May 2022)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: The Minister of State spoke about Carlow and I met a representative of my local radio station last week as Mr. John Purcell was here in Leinster House to visit the Dáil.. One thing that was highlighted was the funding. The Minister of State is aware that local media are vital in rural Ireland. They provide real information in real time and do a great job of fighting wrong information....

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Departmental Reports (5 May 2022)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: The next few weeks are very important. When the report is published we will have to look at the next steps in terms of actions on its recommendations including a framework. It is very important. We all know now, especially as politicians, that media play a significant role within our own lives and in how we communicate to the public and how our information is received.

Ceisteanna Eile - Other Questions: Departmental Reports (5 May 2022)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I thought I could come back in. I will never not take an opportunity.

Accommodation Needs of Those Fleeing Ukraine: Statements (5 May 2022)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I am sorry I missed the Minister of State’s contribution. I was at the national child safety summit in Croke Park. It was an excellent event and well done to all involved, including One in Four. It was an enlightening experience, and this is a matter that must be addressed in the long term. When somebody comes to us for help, the only thing we can do is to offer that help. By the...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy: Issues relating to International Surrogacy Arrangements and Achieving Parental Recognition: Discussion (28 Apr 2022)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I welcome Mr. Kenny Moore and Mr. Lennon here today. We had met with Mr. Kenny Moore. We have all seen that getting proper legislation and a proper framework for everybody is very important. I have listened to their stories. They are hard because families are affected by this. Having read the stories of Mr. Kenny Moore and Mr. Lennon, I feel we need to get this legislation done as soon...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy: Issues relating to International Surrogacy Arrangements and Achieving Parental Recognition: Discussion (28 Apr 2022)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy: Issues relating to International Surrogacy Arrangements and Achieving Parental Recognition: Discussion (28 Apr 2022)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: I thank the witnesses this morning. We heard from the previous witnesses, particularly Mr. Kenny Moore. He spoke about passports in America and Canada, coming back here, the difference and how we learn. That was a major issue for me. The other issue is the timescale. This is all technical and we are learning from this. My biggest fear, and I have learned this through politics and life,...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy: Issues relating to International Surrogacy Arrangements and Achieving Parental Recognition: Discussion (28 Apr 2022)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: That is something the committee needs to examine. It is very serious, and this legislation is crucial. We all have spoken about a three-month time limit here, but it does not seem possible with all the different Departments and how we can perhaps try to get one source that can lead on it. Then at least we will know and work with that area. I thank Ms Byrne but I have concerns about that.

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: Absolutely.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy: Issues relating to International Surrogacy Arrangements and Achieving Parental Recognition: Discussion (28 Apr 2022)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: Where do the witnesses see their big challenges? In fairness to all the witnesses, in their remits they are experts in their particular fields. Where would they see for us as legislators, who are trying to get this fairness and legislation through, the biggest challenges within the different Departments or even within their own remit? Timing is a big issue for us.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on International Surrogacy: Issues relating to International Surrogacy Arrangements and Achieving Parental Recognition: Discussion (28 Apr 2022)

Jennifer Murnane O'Connor: One thing I have learned from this committee is that communication and how we speak about issues is very important. As one guest said, words matter. I have learned we have to be mindful as legislators that we have proper wording and communication. Communication is the key. How we communicate as legislators, and how the Departments communicate, matters. In that way, people will believe...
