Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Equality and Fairness of State Pension: Discussion (21 Jan 2015)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: I welcome Mr. Gaynor. This is a new process. It is very important for this Parliament to have a mechanism that allows citizens to draw the attention of parliamentarians to certain matters and to make cases like that made by Mr. Gaynor. Perhaps he could clarify the nub of the petition he has brought to Parliament. What exactly would he like us to bring in? What type of legislation is he...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Equality and Fairness of State Pension: Discussion (21 Jan 2015)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Is Mr. Gaynor aware of any solutions that are being availed of by those who retired in 2014 and are now facing this anomaly because they do not have State pensions?

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Equality and Fairness of State Pension: Discussion (21 Jan 2015)

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Equality and Fairness of State Pension: Discussion (21 Jan 2015)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: My question is on the basic arithmetic, and goes back to the question on figures raised by Deputy Boyd Barrett. Mr. Gaynor said that around 1,400 people join the pension system in this way every year, and the day after their 65th birthday they become eligible for the State pension. There is a sense that the change was brought in to save a lot of money. However, if the number increases for...

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Equality and Fairness of State Pension: Discussion (21 Jan 2015)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Yes. There is some saving in terms of the pension that would have been payable. Jobseeker's allowance is paid, so there is possibly only a saving of a couple of hundred thousand euro for the State. Is there a financial benefit to the State? I am not sure whether Mr. Gaynor has any thoughts on the matter.

Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions: Equality and Fairness of State Pension: Discussion (21 Jan 2015)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: It might be a useful to ask the Department to calculate the saving and to calculate how much of this is offset by lost tax revenue and the cost of putting somebody on jobseeker's allowance for nine months.

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Job Creation (22 Jan 2015)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Cuirim fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. I am raising this matter in light of the recently published and very good report of the Western Development Commission, WDC, on trends in agency-assisted employment in the western region. The employment created by businesses that receive support from one of the main enterprise agencies - which are usually export-oriented in outlook - is termed...

Seanad: Commencement Matters: Job Creation (22 Jan 2015)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Based on what the Minister of State has said, we are going to get an outline of a strategy in the coming months which probably will not see much action before the end of the life of the Government. Would the Minister of State agree that the Government is failing our region given that we have fallen so far behind the other regions, resulting in rural decline and a lower rate of employment...

Seanad: Direct Provision: Statements (22 Jan 2015)

Trevor Ó Clochartaigh: Cuirim céad fáilte roimh an Aire Stáit. Caithfidh mé a rá go bhfuil áthas orm go bhfuil sé ag brú na ceiste seo chomh láidir agus atá sé ag brú na ceiste seo. Tá mo thacaíocht iomlán aige á dhéanamh sin agus beidh mé ag cur tuilleadh brú air. I take issue with some of the points that have been...
