- Seanad: Medical Cards: Statements (5 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: Will Fine Gael implement its policy on that basis? There are fiscal conservatives in the party who would baulk at such a policy decision. The costs of such a policy could only be met by a Scandinavian style of taxation. One cannot say one is prepared to spend money without saying how one will raise it, and Fine Gael does not say that. The reality is that we are talking about tax rates well...
- Seanad: Medical Cards: Statements (5 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: Unfortunately, I only have one minute, which is not long enough to explain my alternative.
- Seanad: Medical Cards: Statements (5 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: The Government has considered universality and looked at the resources available. It has investigated how the majority of people in that age group can retain a free medical service. To the limited extent it can be, a circle has been squared. We must deal with the reality. The only other alternative is a Scandinavian model.
- Seanad: Medical Cards: Statements (5 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: If it is not a Scandinavian model it is a German model, which has the same effect of universal health care with 50% of one's weekly salary. Those are the answers.
- Seanad: Medical Cards: Statements (5 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: If Fine Gael is not prepared to be honest about how to achieve this, the credibility of what it is proposing lies in tatters. We must accept the situation as it is.

Dan Boyle: The Minister should be aware that there are only two minutes left.
- Seanad: Medical Cards: Statements (5 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: There is only one minute remaining in the slot. I invite each spokesperson to ask a question of the Minister and allow her to use the remaining time available to answer.
- Seanad: Medical Cards: Statements (5 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: Our time has expired and I require a question to the Minister from the Senator.
- Seanad: Medical Cards: Statements (5 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: According to the Order of Business, a question must be asked.
- Seanad: Medical Cards: Statements (5 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: We have exceeded our allocated time. With the permission of the House I will allow the Minister, Deputy Harney, three minutes to respond to the questions.
- Seanad: Medical Cards: Statements (5 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: Is that agreed? Agreed.
- Seanad: Development of Green Technology: Motion (5 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: I move: That Seanad Eireann recognises the importance of the development of green technology for economic growth in Ireland. The most recent edition of the respected publication Newsweek has a cover story entitled "The Green Rescue â Why Obama, Brown, Sarkozy and other world leaders are pushing towards a green solution to the economic crisis". The magazine is not known as the most radical...
- Seanad: Development of Green Technology: Motion (5 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: I thank all who contributed to the debate, including the Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources for his lengthy contribution and the many and considered contributions of the Opposition Members, including Senators Cummins, Coffey, Burke, Bradford, Norris and O'Toole. Senator O'Toole is especially keen that I acknowledge as much. I also acknowledge...
- Seanad: Order of Business (11 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: The sheer revulsion expressed by Members at the hideous and horrible murder of Shane Geoghegan demands an appropriate response from this House, and that it comes speedily. I sense a degree of consensus, although people have articulated viewpoints from different sides of the debate. The consensus I see is that there is intimidation at play, with regard to witnesses and trials and in terms of...
- Seanad: Fishing Industry: Statements (12 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: I do not think there can be any argument among Members that the Irish fishing has been treated as a Cinderella industry that has rarely lived up to its potential and that its important role in sustaining coastal and island communities has never been fully realised. Much of the reason can be attributed to the nature of the agreement when this country entered the then European Economic...
- Seanad: Criminal Assets Bureau Annual Report 2007: Statements (12 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: It is apposite that we are having this debate in an atmosphere where there is obvious public discomfort at the existence of violent crime and the effects of such violent crime on communities. The existence of the Criminal Assets Bureau has been a very effective weapon since its inception to undermine the culture that pervades among those who seek to make their way in our society by using...
- Seanad: Irish Agriculture: Motion (12 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: It is difficult to follow a contribution in praise of misshapen vegetables but I agree with some of what Senator O'Toole has said. He has made an argument which has little to do with this debate.
- Seanad: Irish Agriculture: Motion (12 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: I am familiar with the Minister of State's speech.
- Seanad: Irish Agriculture: Motion (12 Nov 2008)
Dan Boyle: There are two issues at hand, one of which is the effect of the spending curbs in the 2009 budget, with another being the wider debate alluded to by the Senator. I am sure we will have many contributions in that respect. It is a debate which takes in international negotiations and a common position within the European Union. We will have to consider how Irish agriculture fits into that and...
